Mike the Headless Chicken

I just visited this site. It's a little ghoulish to see a chicken with no head, yet still very much alive. So interesting!
I didn't realize there was a movie either. I may just buy it out of morbid curiosity, (my husband already thinks I'm crazy where chickens are concerned, so why not confirm his opinion?).

Speaking of chicken movies: Anybody ever seen the old black and white comedy "The Egg and I"? I bought it years ago & I found the book as well in a second hand store. It's really a good movie & the beginning of the Ma & Pa Kettle series, I believe. Funny stuff! Check it out sometime.

I read that he died when they were touring around, putting him on display, and were staying in a hotel room. They fed him with an eye dropper and also used it to clear his throat. They didn't have the eyedropper to clear his throat, so he choked to death. Something like that.

That's what I read too. I think with a chicken that valuable and that...different...I would have had a pocketful of those babies (eyedroppers, I mean). Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "nest egg".
Wow. Poor Mike. And he fought so hard to live.
Wonder if there have been others that would have made it also, but the owner just made another whack when the first stroke didn't actually kill the bird? They say somehow a blood clot formed and was partly the reason he survived I believe. My own are strictly pets & for eggs, so I've never had the experience. What a thought.

thats sad to choke to death and you dont even eat, it wasnt his fault that stinks

Some people, of course, would argue that Mike was not technically "alive". Yes, his body was functioning, but alive? I guess it depends upon how much of his brain stem survived. I read somewhere that he was scratching around and dust bathing, etc. If that is the case, perhaps the part of his brainstem having to do with pleasure and pain survived. That's a life, I think.

No kidding. Makes me ponder the idea of being without hearing, sight, the sense of touch including pain, and taste. Very deep questions there.

Maybe its just me but that story made me want to cry. My worst nightmare is culling and not doing it quickly and painlessly. I don't believe the chicken was not in pain. I don't know what kind of life could he have?

18 months of making his owner rich and he couldn't have the proper eye dropper to keep him from choking? Just the whole thing is upsetting to me.

Although medically it is amazing that I will say.

But, if we look at the glass being half full, he did have one ear and most of his brain stem.

I'm just kidding.

(About the glass half full, in Mike the Chicken's case, that is.)
