never knew the deployed to places like Korea and Kosovo.....

DRF1973- sounds like your entire family has been in militry

prayers for safe returns for those who have deployed members, and thanks for those who are retired

Kosovo was back in 2001 for hubby. Korea isn't technically a deployment (actually called a "hardship tour"), just felt like one for me sitting here at home. Believe it or not, less than half my family has put on the uniform ... although mostly in the current generation (post-draft).

I'll join you on those thoughts of safe returns!

I served 22 years in the Navy during Vietnam on up to the end of 1992. I served mostly aboard ships, everything from tugboats to aircraft carriers and made many cruises. My dad served 24 years in the Navy. He was on aircraft carriers in the Pacific during WWll, Korea and Vietnam. I have an uncle who was a pilot and flew RC5 Vigilantes over Vietnam and was a candidate to be an astronaut. My brother served 6 years in the Air Force at Vandenberg AFB in California. One of my daughters finished her 3 year tour in the Army 2 years ago. Her final year in the Army was spent in Afghanistan.

All of my family members that were in the military are veterans, which is basically a whole giant load of people. :P I'm currently considering the Air Force for when I'm old enough to enlist.

my hubby was over there several times between 98 and 00. Korea used to be unacompanied but they have family housing now over there. I think only the one year tours are the ones that the soldier does without his family. My husband was supposed to go but they changed it to Ft Knox.

Was he ever deployed? Sorry i got a horrible memory!

My cousin. No, he was never deployed, and won't be because of his MOS {thankfully!}
He also got his orders and doesn't have to go to Japan {again, thankfully!} he's going to 29 Palms in CA for at least the next 2 years. I was kinda worried because everyone kept telling him how awful it was. But he told me most people just don't like it because it's in the middle of the desert. He's happy with it, anyway.
Andy Shaw {running for state senate here in PA} stopped by our house the other day campaigning. With him was a friend of his who is a former Marine who's MOS was similar to Matt's. He said he was in 29 Palms for a year and a half and loved it. He said as long as you aren't a party person or whatever, it's good. I guess that's why most people don't like it - because it's so far away from civilization. But Matt isn't a party person, and he can go to Palm Springs on weekends, so I think he'll be alright there.

Mmm. There is a lot of peer pressure. What branch of the military is he in?
