Mille Cochin Info

Erin and Josh, This just gets more fun, interesting, perplexing and challenging every day! Looks like we've jumped straight into the "deep end" of the gene pool. Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas any more.

I can't resist any longer...for some reason, I want to just kiss that cush, and I love his darker buff over the light. What I figure is that if I can't stop thinking about something, I need to just do it...love this guy, so I bid.

Hi All,

Your birds are looking lovely. I always enjoy the photos. Mine are ten weeks old now. I am selling two or all three of the roosters, as I live in town, and I'm not sure I have time to make a sound-proof rooster box. I have friends who want all the girls, but I am keeping one. I just need to decide which one. Probably the runt, as she is tamest by far. I took some more photos this evening, not great, but a good record for me of how they have changed. I thought you may like to see them too.

After careful consideration, I have listed my Mille Fleur Cochins on EggBid. I thought I could start another project..Since my main focus is my silkies, exhibiting and breeding, I will not have time for a new endeavor. Beautiful birds, girls are laying. I have 2 auctions. Please email me @ sunshinesilkies.com if you have any questions...

They will all be a year old at the end of June with the exception of the younger roo. He is almost 6 months old.

I have one pullet that is the "calico" color and the other 2 pullets have the mille pattering..

I am also going to be doing Mottled/Buff Columbian crossings, and line breeding for type. My birds are all still growing out right now though.

I love the type on them though. So I think I may show them next month.

I have a question? I know for shows a cockeral is under a year. But would it be bad to show a 4month year old one. I know he won't be all the way filled out. Should I just wait until next year? I'm just eager I guess.

I think I will show Buff Brahma Bantams, White Silkies, Splash Silkie, BLRW, and I was debating on my cochins. They are only 4-5 months old. And pretty scraggly looking. But maybe by March 20th they would look better? what does everyone think?

I would wait, but I am not experienced in showing poultry or anything. I just listened to the judge at our 4H fair talk about how the little OE cockerel just can't compete with the more mature bird simply because of age. At rabbit shows, it's the same thing...a young senior put up against a mature senior doesn't have a shot, but they will usually comment on how it is looking so far for that age.

Ok, dumb question while on the show subject, are buff columbian bantam cochin showable? I don't think it is an approved variety, right?

Thanks,

Kristen

I would love to post more photos here but I haven't any more room in my photos section so I suppose I will post them all to my folder on our Yahoo list.
There are so many nice birds being shown and I am excited that mine are showing all three colors and a bit of pattern. I can't wait for the next generation!

Hey Josh, what a bizarre little chick. Im thinking it may develop a white saddle? just guessing. I have a couple other wierd ones I'll post later from previous hatch. The momma was a mfc project hen that hatched chipmunk and developed partridge color with a bit of pattern. This chick is developing a weird pattern but every feather has a teardrop white tip. ...off to photo shoot
