Mille Cochin Info

Thanks for the link, Gail.. I will check it out. I've also been on chickencolours.com and been chatting with gurus and YES.. mind boggling. What is really neat is the possibility of producing totally different varieties than you would expect like partridge. I may even be able to breed toward golden laced and red pyle... This is super neat and I am learning more all the time. I have faith I will get there ...it's just not going to be anytime soon. So, I gave up the rat race and am just doing my own thing.

And thanks for the compliment on the signs. I really did enjoy doing them but time is something I don't have enough of. Here is "Henry's Faverolles" .... This is for a Bycer who has the most beautiful salmon and blue salmon faverolles... oh, if I only had the room for those and .... crele cochins and spangled rosecombs and red pyle cochins and ...

I just read through the entire website and realize how little I know. A couple things kinda stuck out to me. First is how many folks in the show circuit concentrate their efforts on the outer package of the breed without focussing as much as they should on the inside; behavior traits and disease resistance... that some breeds are bred so tight for their look that they are actually at risk of dying out because of this as sickness could potentially wipe them out. With this project we are all working on, I can see how this is possible as we are all sharing lines and exchanging birds.. potentially passing this on to eachother.

The point that sticks out the most to me is the writer's pet peave, so to speak. Some refer to their chickens as a particular breed when, in fact, their birds do not have the proper genetic make up to be that breed. He used the variety, "mille fleur" as an example... really got me thinking. I know Im am getting a bit loose with the term. I always refer to mine as project birds but this was a good refresher.

And lastly, how genetics is not the end all be all of breeding chickens. Using common sense can get you very far. (My breeding technique

) but that basic knowledge of genetics will take the common sense breeder to the next level and that there is no excuse, with all that is available to us, for any breeder not to have at least a basic knowledge of genetics.

Gosh, I really need to read my posts before hitting enter! I rambled on about how some breeders aren't considering "health resistance" instead of disease resistance

Chickenlittle, very cute. Are the feathers coming in black or brown? Mine are looking brownish gold with black
