Mille Cochin Info

I sure do have to agree with you there, Lynne!
I've got six day-olds running around out in the chicken barn. They're in with the main flock but two moms are watching over them. Two more hens are setting on eggs that have pipped!

You must have more hatching from Renoir & #17, don't you?

By the way ~ that color is what I was told is light eb. Most of my Calicos have hatched that color.

I hope you have a GREAT weekend and hatch lots more beautiful babies!

Nancy,

I'm so glad there are people on here who know genetics

I'm sooooo genetically challenged

Unfortunately, all the other eggs (4) gathered from the Renoir/ #17 match were infertile. # 17 is still young so her eggs are sporadic. I'm getting ready to switch pens, pullets, hens & roos for the Fall mating so I hope to have some additional eggs later in the year. It has been so hot that fertility is low so I'll just wait until conditions are more favorable.

I did get 4 babies from my new roo, Diego II. I'm eager to see how they develop.

Looks like your Calico project is coming right along. Good luck ~!!!!

I thought I'd post a picture or two of my Millie pullet and cockerel. I have a couple of older ones, and I'll see if I can dig up some pictures of them. The rooster is my avatar. They are great birds, but are more partridge colored (very little white on either one), and came from Ralph ("Tate") who used to live up here in Massachusetts. The two posted below came from eggs I bought from Lynne ("wwmicasa1") right here on BYC.

I really like the way they are coming in. Great personalities, too, although the boy is a bit "nippy."

Oh my gosh those fuzzy little feet are just to die for!!

Sprinkles and Candy are doing great! A week and a half ago Sprinkles decided to try going broody and sit on golf balls all day, and when I took them away after a few days she found herself a really good hiding place in the yard and hid there from me all day! I found someone local who has fertile bantam cochin eggs for sale and was going to get a few for her, but then she lost interest in the whole idea
tongue.png
They are both so sweet and friendly, my kids just love them. My almost 4 year old daughter picks them up all the time, and yesterday my little boy (16 months) walked up to Sprinkles and she stopped and let him pick her up! She is just a tiny little thing but has such a personality!

Do their markings change a lot as they get older? I've noticed that Sprinkles is getting more white in her feathers and Candy is getting more little black bits.

Your pair are coloring up very nicely.

They will continue to change as they mature. Thanks for posting the pics. It's always nice to see how consistent the pattern tends to be from my eggs. I do hope you are enjoying them. They have such great personality.

Keep us updated with pics as they get older

It maybe a "no no" to use them, but I have had the best patterns develop from a partridge pullet. This is "not to say" that it won't crop up in later breedings but in my experience the chicks hatched from a well patterned (partridge) pullet have the strongest pattern "without" the partridge stripe cropping up. Again, I am experimenting along with all of you to see what works. My concern, at this point, is "type".

I don't seem to have much problem with pattern. I guess that is why it is called "a project"~!!

Good because she seems to be getting great color, so it would have been a shame to not be able to use her. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/19130_100_1312.jpg

here's a pic of Cloudy

Doesn't that just panic you when they wander off to do their "thing"?

Be glad that she changed her mind about being broody. Over half my girls are broody right now. Eggs are non-existent

I agree, the personalities of these birds is awesome. Even my newest roo, Diego II, stands for his turn to be pick-up & cuddled. My boys are so special to me

Yes, their markings do change as they mature. Especially after the first molt. I have pictures of some as babies that don't look anything like their pics now. Trying to hang on to all of them until they show their true colors is the hard part

I would love to get input on my Mille Cochin pair... they are about 14 weeks old now.

Here is my roo "Turtle", he is getting more and more brown / red feathering... so pretty

and his girlfriend "Bunny", she only has a very small amount of brown / red feathering on her face (no where else)

hipeatall, very pretty birds. I don't believe it's possible to get a bird resembling the mille fleur color with them as they are just way too dark. You will most likely get more birds of similar color; black mottleds and black mottleds with hints of gold. If you are shooting for a mf pattern, I would get a nicer roo from someone on here. Many folks are looking to rehome pretty boys because they just have too many. I bet your pullet will throw lighter offspring w/ a lighter roo.

Since Lynne is showing off some baby portraits, I thought I'd toss in a few
smile.png
Would these guys be considered "light eb" and does anyone know how condusive that down color would be to mf pattern?

Here's one with a faint chipmunk stipe on its eye and down the back

Erin, your babies are FAT!

I've had some hatch like that ~ fat, right out of the egg.

Those hens must lay REALLY healthy eggs...
I have to admit, I've gotten really bad about record keeping. I haven't even put leg bands on any of my last few batches of babies. I couldn't even tell you how old half of them are! I think I may have a few more chickens (and SHEEP) than I can handle right now. I'd be fine if they didn't all need pens. And paddocks. And pastures. And cages. It seems that I spend all day moving animals around and/or fixing or building fences...

Hot and tired in the Bluff Country ~

Hipeatall's MFC's came from me I think. If they did, she can get MF from crossing those two. If I were her, I would hatch a LOT and only keep the ones that hatch out wheaten, or almost buttery yellow, no back stripes, place/sell the rest. You will get rid of the partridgey genes and get good color all at one time.
