Mille Cochin Info

I've been using egg cartons this year with no problems. Just cut the tops down as much as possible (see pic below) to leave as much of the top of the egg out of the carton as possible. I know there are a lot of mixed feelings regarding using the cartons. I just liked the reasoning of keeping them upright for the last 3 days and the egg oriented in the same position that they were in the turner. This pic is of one of the very first ones that hatched this year using the cartons - he climbed back into the carton to get a better look around!! And if you look closely, you can still see his yolk sac!!
(He hatched from the egg in the bottom of the pic, and if you look closely at the egg at the top of the pic, at about 1:00, you can see where that one has pipped.)

I also put down a layer of shelf liner over the mesh, as you can see in the pic.

Thanks Coopa! This is about my 6th hatch and I've done it both ways but it's so hard to tell the outcome with eggs being shipped or not, humidity and what not! Just not convinced, but I never cut mine down as far as yours so maybe I will try that!

I have successfully hatched many chicks using egg cartons. I now have 3 dozen in cartons bakin away.:<) I have used them from day 1 and also just for the last 3 days under lockdown.
As mentioned above..... I also cut the bottoms out for some ventilation and trim the tops. It really does catch a lot of the mess as a side benefit too.

I am plagued with hatching mille cockerels myself. I do love the boys though

mommahen, I am hatching now. I have a prissy-bator my husband made out of a huge styrafoam cooler. It holds a hundred or so eggs. There is no turner so I just roll the eggs around 3-5 times a day. I don't even mark x's and o's anymore. I just write the date on the bottom and put them in the hatcher as they approach hatch date. My hatcher is around 70% humidity and it's wire cloth. I haven't had any problems.

Hey Calico people, I have a pair for you. The pullet was hatched from eggs from Josh and the cockerel is from my birds. He is from Lynne's pullet she sent this Spring and the baby daddy is my mottled/mille split boy (red mille roo from Lynne's f2's over SQ mottled hen) I hatch last year. It will have slightly improved type. I can send them packing for $15 to anyone who'd like to pick up. Or, I can wait til it cools off a bit and ship for $30 + $50 shipping in a month or so.

I would be interested but it may be a whille before they could be shipped here due to the heat. It takes a long time to cool off here on the Gulf Coast of Texas! Maybe as long as October.

Hello,
Here are some pictures of my almost 8 week old chick.
Can anyone tell me if it is a pullet or a cockerel?
I call it Millie but that could change.
Is "Millie" more a Mille Fleur or Calico type?
I would like have a project flock of either color.

I got Millie and the Buff speckled hen with a group of Partridge chicks at a local auction so I don't know their parentage.
What ever the are I love them. They are so adorable and beautiful. Cochins definately were the right choice for me.

I hope I got the attach process right. I sure don't know much about how to use a forum. heck I feel like I can't even spell!!!
I sure am learning alot just reading what you all discuss.
