Mille Cochin Info

I think this really says how tough alpinefarm is. When I met with her to pick up Aureus...she said she & the roo hiked 5 miles to get to their vehicle!! I think Aureus has the record hike for any chicken

No...but he is with a breeding (and show experienced) home.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Shylee has been aggressively busy with type and I totally offer her my kudos.

Gail...the loom is my salvation this winter! It has been so consistently cold (Meeker is this year's target spot for arctic blasts) that we've been total wimps, been very happy working indoors on the house and our art directions instead of braving it "out thar" much.

I'm Aureus' new proud owner!! I want to thank both shylee and alpine farms for sharing him with me. I hope to improve with him and keep the lovely cochin type going while also improving on color. Shylee also sent me a lovely hen who so gratiously arrived in her box with 2 eggs. Of course those were rushed right to the incubator!!

5 miles? Wow, no wonder he is so good and easy to carry around.

That's a pretty harsh critique. I think he's better than that~ Nancy Krohn doesn't sell trash. Comb that reaches for the stars?? What exactly does that mean? And please, show me a MFC Roo that is perfect, in both type and color. Being that this variety is still a "project" I think no one has any place to complain about type in them. I think maybe you have trashed my Roo perhaps b/c you are jealous b/c I didn't buy from you. If he was from you I'd bet your critique would be much more glowing.

I don't want to step into a middle of a war, so PLEASE don't bash me. From the way I was reading the thread, you asked for a critique and she gave you her opinion.
I'm sure he is worthy of using in a breeding program, but all birds need improvement and she explained that you should add type back in when moving on to your next generation. In my pretty lengthy history with breeding and showing dogs, the males MUST be exceptional for me to want to use them to my girls. That way, I know that the next generation will hopefully be an improvement. Having said that, sometimes crosses are not always improvements for one reason or another and thats why it's important to use the best possible stock to start from.

Hoping I don't get bashed.........

WOW exactly why I dont critique.. people ask for opinions and when they dont like what they hear they get crabby about it..

I am not bashing, I just don't think you can critique type on a project bird. I also don't understand her comment "a comb that reaches to the sky", as I have seen much worse, and I don't see anything wrong with it to begin with. Please tell what is abnormal about his comb? It is not floppy, has enough but not too many points, looks to be the right shape, am I wrong about that?

I have to disagree then after this post I will butt out.

I will not profess to know it all as I do not, I'm really trying to learn from those that have more experience. Shylee has been helping me and I still have a million questions for her, LOL.

Fattie, it does look to me that your roo is narrow and needs more type.

I DO think that each bird SHOULD be critiqued ESPECIALLY in the project phase, otherwise they will not improve and you will just have pretty coloring with no specific breed traits. In the initial phases of a project, you may have to lower your expectations temporarily, but I belive MF cochins are well past that first phase and trying now to keep the type strong and slowly bring in better and better coloring. (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)
