Mille Cochin Info

Actually, Fattie.. It was I that would not sell to you and suggested you look elsewhere ..not really because I did not want to sell to you but, because I don't have anything for sale as well as you wanted someone who was NPIP and I told you mine had run out. I have the pms to prove it and Im not scared to post them

You complained about no one commenting on your roo. Most folks on here are far too kind to be totally honest and I was being that kind until you pushed all of us for a critique. Since you pushed, I thought I do you a favor and be honest. I would only hope someone would do the same for me.

Nancy is a nice gal and Im not going there with her.. She hasn't asked me for an opinion on her birds. I believe she probably does have nicer stuff... stuff that she's keeping.

ETA: I changed a portion of my original post because I felt I was bickering and don't want to add any more fuel to the fire. Im sorry if you took it as me being spiteful. I would NEVER attack someone elses poutlry in a jealous rant... just not my style .. sorry if you took offense

That's a pretty harsh critique. I think he's better than that~ Nancy Krohn doesn't sell trash. Comb that reaches for the stars?? What exactly does that mean? And please, show me a MFC Roo that is perfect, in both type and color. Being that this variety is still a "project" I think no one has any place to complain about type in them. I think maybe you have trashed my Roo perhaps b/c you are jealous b/c I didn't buy from you. If he was from you I'd bet your critique would be much more glowing.

I don't want to step into a middle of a war, so PLEASE don't bash me. From the way I was reading the thread, you asked for a critique and she gave you her opinion.
I'm sure he is worthy of using in a breeding program, but all birds need improvement and she explained that you should add type back in when moving on to your next generation. In my pretty lengthy history with breeding and showing dogs, the males MUST be exceptional for me to want to use them to my girls. That way, I know that the next generation will hopefully be an improvement. Having said that, sometimes crosses are not always improvements for one reason or another and thats why it's important to use the best possible stock to start from.

Hoping I don't get bashed.........

very well said and that is one of the best ways to improve your birds. since males are normally easier to get it only makes sense to get the best you can. I also started almost completely over from my original birds because the improvement just wasnt what I wanted it to be and sometimes you just have to do that also. it really depends on your goal and how much money you want to dump into your breeding program

From the ABA SOP: "moderately and evenly serrated, having five regular and distinct points"

May I see a pic of a MFC Roo with a perfect comb? Anyone have one? Please?

As for the comb comment, here's what we're looking for. (photo from Cackle Hatchery)

I don't refer to the SOP because Im a bit lazy but, from what I've seen at shows and from the quality birds I've had in recent years, a cochin male's comb is thick. It sits low to his head and seems to contour the curve of his skull. The spikes may be long but the base?? I guess you'd call it.. the solid part before it seperates into spikes, is relatively low to his head making it difficult for the comb to be floppy. I don't think Fattie's roo has a terrible comb. I've just seen so many towering combs and no one saying anything about it, that I was a bit harsh.. some of those angles were not complimenting of him though, in my defense

... but, we all certainly need help in that department. Here's a roo I have that has a comb similar to Fattie's younger cockerel. His type is improving weekly but, his comb is what it is. Will his offspring have it.... or worse???

Im keeping him just because Im frustrated with my lack of improvement from last year. I hatched a few nice pullets and two roos worth writing home about.. and one has that comb and no black on his breast. The black on the breast is a big one too. I have noticed that goes hand in hand with an overall well patterned bird. No black on the breast creates offspring with patches of black in the pattern. I've had a harder time with the hens. Experts in genetics say mille fleur is the most difficult variety to get right and you see it time and time with d'uccle who've been the poster child for the pattern for eternity. If THEY are still having problems getting it right, hang on to your hats, people.. this is going to be a long ride. But, we'll never get there, if we don't first consider the most important aspect of mille fleur cochin .. .and that's the cochin part.

Thanks for the informative reply! It does sound like a LOOOONG road. I think your young roo is very nice!

Don't get discouraged Fattie, while I also said you need the best stock you can find, there have been times that I have HAD to live by the motto "don't throw the baby out with the bath water".
lol.png
If your roo is young, isn't there a chance that he will still fill out? I can't remember if you said how old he was.

The "Tidy Bowl Man" (Roo in question) is I think 6 months? The Zohan (younger one) is 3-4 months old. They should hopefully both improve.

Speaking of combs, I just saw the funniest, biggest comb ever on a Delaware Blue Roo someone sold at BYC auction. It looked like a gisnt space helmet, I couldn't stop laughing!

Oh, I see. I compared that comb to my Roo's. I can see the difference. Thanks for sharing that. I didn't even know judges were that picky about combs on them.

Fattie - Do you have a copy of the ABA SOP? If so, on page 18 is the "General Scale of Points" that the judges work from. For all non-white Cochins: 62 points for shape(type) and 38 for color. Max possible points is 100 (to the best of my knowledge, no bird has ever been awarded 100 points). The comb is worth 5 points.

Here's what makes up the 62 possible points for shape/type:
Condition & Vigor - 10 Points
Back - 6
Breast - 5
Comb - 5
Shanks & Toes - 5
Body & Stern - 4
Symmetry - 4
Tail - 4
Weight & Size - 4
Head & Face - 3
Wings - 3
Beak - 2
Ear Lobes - 2
Eyes - 2
Wattles - 2
Neck - 1

Here's what makes up the 38 possible points for color:
Back - 6 points
Breast - 5
Neck - 5
Wings - 5
Body & Stern - 4
Tail - 4
Shanks & Toes - 3
Ear Lobes - 2
Eyes - 2
Beak - 1
Head & Face - 1

I hope that helps a bit.

Im wanting to get started adding some cute eye candy to my flock with the bantam mille cochins ..I also want to put some of my birds together and see what happens ..so any info or advice bring it on...I have duccle's and a few splash pure cochin hens .I also have some really nice rumpless auracana hens that I could put with the duccle's ..First let me say Im not looking to start these projects for any other reason than to enjoy myself...I will only keep what I really like..so that being said I could use some advice on what I need to look for in my flock to put in my breeding pens.
The mille bantam cochin project I would like to breed true to help improve the correct type and eventually have some birds that I could share with others, some of the others I will try will be just for the fun of it ..sorry if this offends anyone but in my area we havent much interest in the rumpless breed we love them ,but others not so much so am downsizing to my fav's and mixing with the cochins to get some pretty colors and go more towards cochin breed. Im getting rid of all my rumpless roo's except 1 who will be kept as he's special in type and to me ..he will be put in breeding pen to keep him from mixing with others and will be given a couple hens to keep him happy ..LOL..

Silkie .....Bantam Rumpless Auracana.......Old English......Duccle.....Splash bantam cochin.....Guinea.......Peacock...Call Duck...Barnacle Geese....Llama..Goats....2 Emu....just for fun ..and of course a menagerie of cats n dogs:caf
