Mille Cochin Info

Hey Erin and Lynne
frow.gif

Thanx for the comments I really am hoping he helps keep the white to a minimum We will see Hes in now with my 2 best girls 1 has a bit much white and the other has no white other than the chevrons So it may be a bit yet I am just hoping that the to much white doesnt come from the columbian in which case its a lost cause Just have to keep breeding the darker hens and hope it goes away or at least gets a little darker with a minimum of white Nough for now Time for my beauty rest

He looks a lot like mine but, yours has nicer hackle coloring... really nice. May I ask where you got him or what cross you used. That tail feather stinks but, it's not too much to worry about. Some of his offspring will have it and some won't. Cull any offspring that has it and you're on your way... unless they have exceptional coloring.. then, I'd keep them, put them to a bird that has a smooth back, then cull hard the next generation.

btw, I think Lynne's girls would give you some really dynomite offspring from him

Asking the Millie experts for opinions......again, this is not a millie cochin project, I'm just borrowing the color from the Millie Mother, this is an Ohiki color project............this is the best male offspring from the Millie cochin mother......any opinions on color?....................thanks........................chrisf

I'm not very good at taking pictures and work alot so I had to take them last night.

But, I was wondering If I could get some feedback from MF breeders in here. I have one light pullet and one dark. I would like advice on what you think of them and also what you would bred them to to help make their Color Pattern better for the offspring. Thanks to any and all that can help

The rest of the 20 pullets I have are all in between.

Thank you

The offspring I've gotten with the 2 hens hes with aren't so good. One hen looks mostly partridge and the cross with the mottled hen so far look mottled with brassy hackles like the mother. But I have another rooster just like this guy and I feel his type is even better hes as wide as he is long. His color is not as flashy, he has less white. He's in a pen with a buff hen and a few hens that lay the eggs I eat. I kept him for backup and hatched some the eggs from him and the buff hen. I have a couple these offspring that look columbian with bit mottling and some plain old buff looking. I was thinking of putting those offspring with the flashier rooster.

Now if I were to get just one girl from Lynne I'd save years. I think shes in sunny CA too.

I'll try and get some more pics of the other rooster and some the offspring I've gotten.

Oh and I got both roosters from hatching eggs on BSA I can't remember who, it was a year and half ago I'm guessing. I think they sold all their cochins and only raise silkies now.

Beth, it's difficult to critique a bird when it's being held or somehow restrained. A bird in its natural position, in good lighting and a couple of different angles will really help us know what we are seeing and can address issues. From what I see, you are in the same boat as many on here. You have some pretty eye candy but, they need lots of help in the type department and pattern department. Breeding light to dark would help you gain an inbetween if you don't have any with proper background color and speckling on the breast to begin with. It just depends what it is you are wanting, as to what your next move is.

Jen, I think your problem is you're breeding dark to dark. Even though your roo appears flashy, he's dark.. like mine. My boy started all black mottled and later grew in some adult lighter plumage. If I bred him to a mottled with brassy hackle (basically, what he is) I will get more of the same. That other buff columbian looking hen you have is really dark. It's great you have such a massively hunky roo to work with. Many of us, including myself, would buy him from you in a heartbeat. Don't waste him on the mediocre!

It's good you are trying to breed him to quality females but, you won't get anywhere fast if you don't have the proper genetics (ingredients for your MF recipe)

Get him some girls!

Yup, it's a roo. I love all that white. I don't have near enough on mine but I am getting there.
He will be so different in another 3-4 months in color! That is one thing I so love about the "project" part of this. I will miss it one day when they turn out exactly like we expect them to.

Thanks Msbear, I will try to get better photo's. I am trying to work on the MF color pattern along with type. I want the ticking at the end of the feather to be better and more defined but, don't know if that is possible. I have a very nice colored cockrel but,t hen I have a very dark and then one with no white at all. So, I will try to get better pic's of them foraging on the ground

Thanks again for trying to help

Here is the color pattern I got from one of offspring. Shes a sweetie pie but no where close to what we want.

I did hatch few eggs from him crossed with a buff hen, the hen is nothing special. This is one of the offspring from that cross.

I would consider trading rooster 2 for a hen or pullet that would be a nice match for rooster 1.
