Mille Cochin Info

Ok quick story with question....

A friend at worked asked if I had banty eggs that he could have to hatch. So being the nice chicken mama, I gave him some of the Mille Cochin eggs from the hen I posted pictures of earlier. I told him the father could be a huge lt. Sussex or a Dominique. He said it didn't matter as long as they weren't full size chicks....

21 days later.........

He came walking into my office today with a box of little chicks and said "here you go" I said, "I thought you wanted chicks" and he said, "no I said I wanted to HATCH banty chicks!!!"

Luckily I had a broody hen at home so off I went with my box o chicks and in they went. Mama Japanese Bantam has her hands full, but is happy!!

They are all black with yellow on the head and tummy, darker fluffy legs. Any idea what in the world they will look like??? They are cute, not what I wanted in my flock but cute.....

Lesson learned, ask if they will be keeping the chicks

The eggs I gave him were all little and the following hatched out:

4) Dominique x Mille Cochin (fluffy leg black chicks with yellow tummy)
1) lt. Sussex x Japanese buff black tail (cute little buff chick)
1) Dominique x Japanese black banty (cute little black chick)

Question....what would/could I expect by putting a black mottled in with my millies? There's not a lot of barring on my pullets. Thay have white tips, with a darker brown "v", not black v.

Many of us cross in Mottled with some of our Mille Fleur projects. For me I wanted the better type that my Mottleds displayed and it helps with those white tips and the black is going to be on those chevrons anyhow. This will certainly help you in color but you need to breed for type to start with. If you can get type in all your project birds the color will come back with further breeding.

My offspring have come out differently but I got a lot like this in the first generation......

Or like this......

My second generation crossed back in for type, not color.......

When I cross the girls that all look like this in type to my more red roos (they do have black and white in them, too) I expect to get a much better pattern. I just really have to make sure that type is cemented in to start with.

Thank you Amy...could I get your opinion on this mottled girl?

That pic's a couple of weeks old, she has more mottling now. I guess a hen is not the best option lol The only other mottled I have is my frizzle roo. Guess I could wait and use a smooth feathered roo from those two.

Hard to tell from this angle but from what I can see of her chest and side she looks pretty good. I like the shape of her head and eye. It appears she has a round shape to her body, her legs look okay from what little I can see, she seems to have a smooth round rump. I would certainly use her. I avoid putting in genes that are of no use to the project. Frizzles are a love of mine but I would suggest leaving anything out that won't help you at all.

I crossed my Mottled roo to my MF project hens and got the most offspring to start with but only because my Mottled hens refused to lay the 4 months they were with my MF foundation project roo. I hatched a MF project roo and was able to breed him to my Mottleds later on to get more to work with.

I no longer have this roo. He was decent to work with and gave me some great offspring but I wound up keeping this boy, Xavier.

I am about to put that F2 girl in the last photo (and her sisters) of my above post with him for chicks. And then next spring I will put them with another roo I have coming up. I don't have a photo of him yet.
I work on type and know the color and pattern will come eventually. Stick with type to start with. If you breed your Frizzle with your hen you may not get the type you need for your project. And remember that roos are a dime a dozen so buying a really nice one should not cost too much even if you have to have it shipped in.
