Mille Cochin Info

Quote:
well if your milles are a mottled based variety which you can tell by the chick coloration (look for white chest on first feathers) they will be various colors of mottleds but the pattern will be incomplete

I recently read a post (forgive me, I can't remember from whom) that said something about chick fuzz color and pattern.

There's also been mention about chick eye fuzz showing gender, as well as, the color of the first feathers coming in showing gender.

Can we put our collective heads together and get all these ideas down in one place?
I can collect them and make it into one post, but, as a newbie, I'm really interested in seeing how my chicks will feather out!

So far I have several pure yellow, dark brown chipmunk, light tan chipmunk, a dark charcoal with white belly, etc.

The oldest pure yellows are feathering out yellow with sort of a chevron pattern.
The darker kids are feathering out black with white

the best way that i can tell sex on my chicks is the cockerels have shorter primaries than pullets at a few days old. they also have thicker shorter looking legs. other than that the other ways dont work, at least for me. the feather thing also only works on a few breeds with bantam cochins being one of them

MsBear has about the chick color and overall color outcome on her BYC page. I don't think there is anything gender/color related, but I didn't really read it all. I was just amazed at how many colors the chicks can be!

Thanks to you both!

I'm getting better at feather sexing, but I'm best at @1-2 weeks - from what I've seen so far, the girls primaries and secondaries are the same length (or close) as their ...is it coverts? (the feathers on their upper arm...have a migraine - can't find the right words...)

and boys have longer primaries and secondaries and noticeably shorter feathers on their upper arm.

As for feather sexing the first day or two - just starting to work on that right now!
BUT - I'm wondering about my ability b/c nearly ALL my chicks from Saturday appear to be females (wishful thinking?? LOL)

I remember someone saying - "if you see black - it is a boy" but where is the black?

How can you tell a chick will be mille colored b/c I seem to be getting a bunch that come in black and white and then become sort of a "reverse mille" with black, then brown, then white tips...sigh.

I snapped a few photos this morning of my birds and got a few of some up coming pullets for my project, too.

I am always anxious to see what they will look like at about 8 months but here they are at 3 and 3.5 months.

And I love my Calico kids growing up. With all my pretty Mot/MF hens that I won't part with I will put back with a typy Calico roo and see what else I may get. There are endless possibilities. And I plan to see what Calico girls back with my dark red or mostly black MF roos will give me.

I am tickled when I see one growing up without too much black in the hackles. I keep breeding in those hens because of type but know I need to pick and choose the ones without so much black to help with pattern eventually. It is nice to see them without the black hackles but if they don't have type they are put in a pet home or out in a "fun" flock.
I am still watching this babe mature. So far she is looking like I can put her in breeding. Her body feels right but she is just a youngster still in the brooder room at night. I can't wait to see her in a few months. And I find myself already trying to pair her up! She's a baby, I keep telling myself! Slow down.
