Mille Cochin Info

I hatched a few chicks from my MF project pen to get a start working out the breeder birds genetics. I have three chicks that are about 8 weeks old that I'd like to figure out. All three were eWh type yellow chicks with faded chipmunk back stripes. When they feathered out, they were "smutty" looking Co or Db typed. They do some faded red/mahogany on saddle feathers and sport some spangled markings on tail feathers.

What I'd like to know is are there other signs to figure outmifnthey are Db or Co as MF may contain either or both? Also, if I decided to keep them around to breed back into the line, under what circumstance(s) would that be useful? Although they're pretty young, I'm expecting that their type will be appropriate at this time, based upon their parentage.

Great news!
The big red roo and one of the typey, black girls from Amy have come to live at my farm and help me improve the type in my cochins!!

They arrived safely and in great shape - thanks so much Amy!!
They're not too sure about this cold snap (-12 windchill this AM) after coming from SC, but they're doing just fine!!

I was making scrambled eggs the other day and the three Cochin eggs I cracked open were fertile. I haven't had a male in with my girls for at least two months. No... I think longer than that (Oct/Nov I separated genders). So, I am collecting a few to try and hatch now. Lets see what happens since Mildred obviously has been holding on to the 'seed' for some good reason unbeknownst to me.

Glad they arrived and I can't wait to see what they give you paired up with your other birds. Always fun to have something new to work with.

Posting photos on here is easier now. I haven't had any trouble with posting photos. I still haven't gone into my album to see if I can organize them though. I hope so. I have tons and it is a lot of work to go through them all.

I have a question on breeding in type. I have an exhibition black mottled roo I used on my Mille hens. I have a nice Black mottled split roo and 4 split hens from the crossing after culling. I had read on here a while back I think that to lock in type you take the offspring and breed back to the typey black mottled dad and that locks in type. Did I remember that correctly? So my question is if I breed the split girls back to the pure BM dad what will that do to pattern? Wouldn't it cancel out the 'split'? Just need to know what to do next. Can I use the split Mottled roo I have? Maybe splits to splits? or put him on the mille hens? I know the answer is on this thread somewhere but can't seem to find it. Thanks for any help!

If you breed back to your Mottleds you will just get more Mottleds so no, that is not the correct way to breed for better MF type.
I bred brother to sister a few times and took a lot of my Mottled splits back to the MF mother or father, which ever way I had bred it and also aunts and uncles, if they were decent to start with.
Breed your Mottleds only one time to get type. At least, that is how it worked for me. All my splits were bred to more splits or MF but never more Mottleds.

I have Schmoozle, my MF/Mottled split that has been working out exceptionally well to breed in type but color will take longer. I have taken some of his siblings and offspring back to my foundation MF/buff Columbian roo and gotten more color to work with and the type is still in the offspring.
I seldom breed for pattern but am always aware of who is out of what to carry the genes I need for pattern later. It will come so don't sweat it too badly.

Concentrate on your type but now that you have offspring from your Mottleds, keep the best and weave that into your program. And don't get rid of them once you have something out of that. For one thing, they will color up more next year and at some point you may need to breed a great grand kid back to them to bring out the type. Losing the pattern will be an easy remedy to fix down the line but lose the type and you have a long road to get back on track again.
