Mille Cochin Info

I love the pattern of Katelyn's birds. Who is that? I haven't heard of her before. Nice Amy pullet too!
Please excuse the disaster that is my coop at the moment.
I haven't had a chance to do the 'winterized cleaning' yet.
I decided to get a few pics today. I am aware some are not MFC...

My runty blue from Rosalyn. She should be the same size as the BC with the light hackles, Amelia and JB.

JB (Byron x Bridgette), Junior's full, little brother.
Junior is the calico cockerel in the pen. (next picture down, center)

The smutty BC pullet in the middle seems to be Junior's favorite. Poor girl looks horrid.

Amelia - Hatched from Amy's eggs.

Amy - Hatched from Amy's eggs.

Light Hackle BC (Byron x Bridgette), Junior and JB's full sister.

My partridge based pullet hatched form Rosalyn's eggs. She may actually widen out. She's about 10 months now.

Older pullet from Katelyn, Younger pullet from Katelyn and Junior and JB's sister.

Junior's older sister (Byron x Bridgette) and hatchmate.

My gorgeous black cockerel hatched from Sue's (Sutillman) eggs. I have more eggs on order!

Katelyn is Cadeau. I believe she has Twyla, Lynne and Amy's lines...?

I have a brooder full or Byron (Dr. Evil 2 to you), Millie, Mildred and Bridgette babies right now. Millie and Mildred are the 2 MFC girls I got form you last year, Erin. Since the babies are a week old now, I want to get a couple of pics of how they are feathering in. To be continued... ;)

Hi Erin, I sold Mellie for $75. Apparently I'm not the only one who sees type in her. I am just wondering why you thought her type was no good? Were you going by these pics

Or how she looks now just coming off a hard moult?

I am no expert, but from what I have seen, she seems 'down' in the rear. No high cushion. In the standard it says female bantam Cochin's cushions should be level with the tops of their heads in a natural position. Cockerels cushions are supposed to be level with their eyes. She has some width in the 2nd pic, but at her age, she should have a lot more cushion from what I have seen. At under 6 months old, my dark pullet, Amy has more cushion height and width than I am seeing in Mellie. My partridge based girl has a low tail like your Mellie.

Again, I am no expert, but that's what I see.

This is our battle in the MFC project. So many folks jumped in wanting color, color, pattern, pattern that type was getting lost. Conformation is difficult enough to get in the Cochin with basic colors. Believe me, I worked with whites for years!

Getting birds as close to the SOP as possible and obtaining that great pattern is going to be a major struggle. We are still quite a ways out from that.
I sell pretty birds constantly that have no place in a breeding program. People see pretty birds and think they are close enough to MF for them so they buy them. Works for both of us!

What drives me to insanity is the folks that want to buy my best MFC and not expect me to ask a war pension for them. Sorry, but there is a lot of blood, sweat and tears that goes into breeding good quality MFCs. It is hard to part with what I need to improve on what I already have.

I think I get what you mean Amy, somebody wants your best birds for the price of one less steller. I think I get that it takes time. I did golden laced with my grandfather once and we just this year started getting dcent ones and I gave up. I seen Milles and couldn't resist. We had prices higher on the better ones and people wanted them all to be the same price so after a while of bickering they all sold for what we asked.

regarding marek's disease, it seems to be one of those diseases that will be next to impossible to eradicate, much like coccidia and some others, since it seems to be everywhere. my strategy isn't to vaccinate for it. I lost a few birds to it last spring/summer. those that didn't get sick are resistant to it, and should, therefore, pass it along to their own chicks. it seems to affect birds usually before they start laying (16-20 weeks old), so if they're healthy enough to lay, they didn't get it and will go on to my breeding flocks.

the only ones that were affected though, were chicks i got in from a hatchery (5 out of 27 received). not any of my own home-grown ones... seems to me vaccinating is prolonging the disease, by not removing the susceptible genes.
