Do you have a pic of that rooster you got from me ? I know its only been just a few weeks but he looks like he has already filled out some Hes not that scrawny little chik I remember But he was the best of what I had to send I am very interested in how he turns out How are those girls doing and the chix doing ?

Here is a little pullet that I adore. She reminds me a lot of Mike's Tuba. However, this little one has obvious red leakage. Mike's girl should acquire some later.
I am excited about this lady because of her white tipping. She has great type but again, I could wish for better wing carriage.

Hi Mike!
That roo pictured in the pen is your handsome roo boy. He has grown a good but but is still filling out. I think spring will show him to be a nice fella!
I tried to get photos of the girls you sent me but all I got was black blurs! They are in the breeding pen with Xavier and are busy all the time. The only half decent shot I was able to keep is still blurred.



And one of the chicks pictured here. This little one refused to look at the camera. Always looking for a way down!

Nancy, I feel for you in South Dakota! I couldn't take it at all! I hate Missouri weather, it is too cold for me but last year we were very lucky. We have been very lucky so far in November too! This weekend is supposed to be in low 70's! That's crazy!

Hi Pinetown, thanks for sharing. I am so sorry you are dealing with Merek's. I have friends going through the same thing and it can be very frustrating. I myself am recovering from a nasty bout with MG. Some birds were not affected, some were mildly affected and some were constantly showing symptoms. The key is to cull for health which sounds like what you are doing. I bought the vaccine and am working out a regiment now. Cull all birds that are obviously sick, vaccinate the rest and go from there. I also dealt with coccidiosis last year which had a significant effect on my youngsters. I must have nasty amounts of that organism in the ground combined with weakness in my show quality black and wheaten rosecombs as well as my SQ cochins. My MFC's were pretty much unaffected due to their hybrid vigor I presume. Each year will get better as they develop immunity. As for the quality of the birds you are working with, I think they are better than most. A few of your hens are VERY nice.. some of the nicest typed I have seen. They remind me of mine

The nicely marked roo would be a keeper in my coop though you do have a LOT of split breast in your flock. A cochin's breast should be wide and free from any noticeable creases running down the center of the breast. If you weren't already aware, the silver laced cross pullet in the back of the last pic will screw up your pattern and will throw silver based males... some visible some carriers and will throw a wrench in your breeding program. Next year, look for birds with a smooth breast and breed those back to your best typed parents. I would cull the lighter roo as well. He just doesn't have the type or the color of the other roo.

I have enjoyed seeing all your wonderful chickens, and learning from you. So, I am sharing some of my chicken pictures and a little history . I have had backyard chickens for 25 years. Mostly bantam cochins and easter egg chickens that I bought at the feed store or from hatcheries. Last year I had the chance to buy Mille/Calico Cochins from Nevada and I fell in love with them. The good news is that I have what I think are some really beautiful chickens, but the bad news is that the chickens I bought have Marek's. I have lost chickens to critters before but have never had to deal with disease. I have lost a lot of my chickens this summer to Marek's, which broke my heart. I have talked with our local 4H leader and a local chicken breeder & shower and I believe that the worst of this nasty disease is behind me. I'm optomistic that the chickens that have survived will have resistance. Here's what I have left of my flock. I'm interested to hear what you think of them.
