Mille Cochin Info

Hello guys! I took some (very poor) updated photos of my Cochin pen. If I could get some feedback on them I would really appreciate it.

This is my lone Mille pullet with my blue mottled frizzled pullet

This cockerel I'm going to have to cull, but he is providing some warmth in their pen:

Another young cockerel, very slow to mature, great leg feathering and I really like the width he carries throughout his back.

Side-view of the oldest male that I need to cull, still has a nice profile overall I think. I was hoping the one in front of him was a pullet, but found pointed saddle feathers today:

All 3 females and 1 male:

You have snow! I am jealous!

The MF pullet looks nice. She needs a nice typy roo to get you going. The profile of that one rooster is nice.
A lot of Cochin roos can be slow to mature. I have had a few Mottled boys that I wondered if they would ever grow feathers and get their type together. And then some just bloom over night at a month old or so. I seldom give up unless i dislike one for a few months. But then, you might say I am a hoarder!

You have birds to work with there. They are maturing and looking better. Block out pattern since that will come later. Don't worry about it right now. Just look at trying to create a basketball shaped bird. It will come together!

Funny looking, that's what! Here is my accident "Spanky." He runs my layer flock and is a fabulous watchdog. This was a splash cochin roo over a serama hen. She hid a nest of eggs until they hatched!

Does anyone know what a cochin (female) and a serama (male) would look like? My son wants to try and incubate their eggs.
Ohhhh, I like him! My mille fleur roos have terrible type. I am going to have to work on that this spring. Wish I lived near you, I would love to have him!

Thanks guys. He does have good type, but he also has split wing. He's only in there to keep the coop a bit warmer. The lighter colored male and the darker colored bird that I believed was a cockerel are the next two breeder birds. If this male didn't have the split wing, he'd be staying.

I am SO sick of snow I could puke. It just never leaves!!!!

Thanks for the feedback!

I believe my flock is sold. It was great hanging with you guys, but I decided this project was not for me. There are a few of you that are seriously trying to get great type bred into the project, but I have seen far more just breeding and not focusing on the SOP and type. I decided my other 3 projects deserve my attention as there are fewer people focusing on these projects I am working on - they make me happy, too. I feel there are enough able bodied people with the knowledge to eventually get these birds to where they need to be. Good luck to you all!

We will miss you! I am glad you were able to sell them though and hope that makes room for more of your projects.
I agree, so many are out to try to make a buck on this breed and pattern and not do anything to actually help the variety along. I see it over and over and then we find folks have bought into that and are confused about what to do to get better birds. Oh well, it goes along with every breed and variety and will continue on forever.

Here is a handsome little 6 month guy that no one was interested in purchasing a few months ago. I like him okay and he is now in breeding to 3 lovely MF/Mottled girls to see what I get. If I don't like his offspring I will put him back up for sale. Dinky is doing his job and happy to make babies with his beautiful ladies.
