Mille Cochin Info

Thanks, I like him too. He's actually a fav (I say that a lot)
He actually reminds me of Prince when he was a chick, but I'm pretty sure I had Prince set up and in the barn when I collected his egg. I'm going to have to look through my records..
Good luck with your breeding program!

Well, I guess I am not going to be selling my MFCs. I can't get $10 each for the girls around here. I was going to take them to an auction for a quick dispersal, but I can't do that. They are a project and I want them kept together. I would be lucky to get $2 for each girl, anyways. Plus, Bridgette came down with some kind of problem over the weekend. She couldn't walk for a few days. Today she isn't using her beak and wings to steady herself and 'crawl' with her feet curled up, instead she's walking flat on her legs with toes uncurled and without supporting herself. I hope she pulls out of whatever this is. I checked for the obvious stuff and started her on vitamins. It must be a deficiency since she's making progress in her recovery.

Erin, you will still be getting Byron back.

I hatched my first MFC chick for the year. I have many more set.

I also set up my breeding pens this week. It stinks only have two breeding age boys and a young cockerel that the girls beat up on. I decided to use Beakman, my mottled rooster over Byron and Bridgette's BC looking daughters. None are laying as far as I know.

Junior is in with the 3 girls that have breast flowers and nice color and the smutty BC with nice type. Junior has decent type. I put my calico cockerel in with Amy and Amelia - the black w/ red leackage Mottled x MFC girls I hatched from Amy's eggs. Byron is still in with Millie and Mildred. I will be selling Mildred. Her back is very long and she has way to much white now. Millie at least kept quite a bit of her buff color.

-sigh- I guess this means it got serious.

I know it is sad to put a lot into birds and then have people want to pay so little for them. Since I have been doing it a whiel with the MF it isn't as hard for me because people see what I have produced. However, I still get people wanting my very best MFC hens for about $20 each. I would rather keep in my extra pens than sell my hard work for that. Right now I can barely get $20 for my table egg laying hens around here but I haven't gone down on my price. You can't raise a bird for less than $20 and at auction around here they are going for $15 to $18 and you know a lot of sick birds come out of an auction.

For your one not walking well try Selenium. I had one that was wobbly and she was diagnosed with low Selenium. Started her on it and she was better within a week. Something about our soil lacking it. I find it strange because so many folks that show their birds never touch the ground but my vet said he sees a lot of sick birds that have not ever touched the ground, too so he would rather see mine being dirty than kept up off the ground.

Glad to know you have set up those breeding pens. Chicks will abound soon enough and you will get excited seeing them grow up and being beautiful!

Hope you don't mind me posting some updated photos of the birds from PA!
