Mille Cochin Info

Nancy, I've got some of your grand babies here too. I did not keep track of which chick came from which egg, sorry. You were so diligent about labeling them too. I'll post pics and maybe you'll recognize them, and I'd be happy to help you replace your flock.
I'd love to see pictures of your chicks!

That is very sweet of you Martha, but my hens and pullets in the coop are keeping me well-supplied in eggs. I found another tiny pullet egg in there yesterday - one more pullet has figured it's her time to begin laying.

I just call it yellow. I get several shades of yellow, gold, chipmunk, black and now brown down. So far my brown chicks are all feathering out very differently..
Those 5 Bran chicks are out of lighter- buff based / calico hens.

I had 4 Prince chicks hatch recently, 3 yellows and a gold

And my latest chicks from Dinner and Yoyo are a black and a chipmunk
(the yellows are Brandon's)

OMG, I just can't wait for some of mine to hatch!

The addition of Mottleds gave us the mottled beak color. This is one thing I've been pondering:
Are we paying attention to beak color?
Like shafting; it's there, but is it something to worry about right now?

It isn't high on my priority list.. Type first, then pattern, for me. Then nuanses like color, etc

What is the Mille Fleur color standard? Yellow beak? No Shafting? I'm with you, type first then color.

This little guy is Toby. I think he is going to look like a buff columbian. He has looked like one since he hatched and is feathering up like one. I just hope he has the type.

Shafting is a fault in all Cochins. Almost all breeds of chicken. I personally used to think it is pretty, but as I see it more and more in my best -marked Milles Fleurs my mind is slowly accepting that it's "not-desirable."

I hope someone with more experience answers about the beaks. In most Cochin colors we want yellow beaks, but I think Mottleds have the black in the beak, right? I need to buy a book of standards. That's got to be one of my next purchases.
I don't think the Mille Fleur pattern specifies beak/ feet color, does it? Wouldn't that be breed specific?
