Mille Cochin Info

Shafting is a fault in all Cochins. Almost all breeds of chicken. I personally used to think it is pretty, but as I see it more and more in my best -marked Milles Fleurs my mind is slowly accepting that it's "not-desirable."

I hope someone with more experience answers about the beaks. In most Cochin colors we want yellow beaks, but I think Mottleds have the black in the beak, right? I need to buy a book of standards. That's got to be one of my next purchases.
I don't think the Mille Fleur pattern specifies beak/ feet color, does it? Wouldn't that be breed specific?

I meant the MF D'uccles. There should be something specifying the variety's ... definition? On the Orp thread they were just saying shafting is okay in some colors and needed. I need a SOP so I know these things.

What is the Mille Fleur color standard? Yellow beak? No Shafting? I'm with you, type first then color.

The Standard (OOOPS!! Does NOT) list shafting as a disqualification -my bad! It is a Defect in most colors, not a DQ. I was using the D'Uccle listing for Mille Fleur coloring, but hadn't really considered that the coloring of beak, ect would be breed specific -good catch, Nancy. Just looked up the points on coloring, only 1 point.

The MF Cochins are my son's birds, he is electing to show them in the upcoming Delmarva show, these birds are just about 8 months old and not quite ready, I just know we're going to get the pants beat off us by some whites -there is a breeder that seems to be at all the local shows with some outstanding whites. But both my son, and my daughter will be using the Milles for showmanship, this gives them some one on one with the judge to really assess the birds, so I'm glad we entered them.

No problem on beak coloring. As we get the more desired coloring on the bird, the beak will be a nice gold color along with the correct feather color. Nothing to stress about right now.

Bridgette is back to 100%!

Change of plans again. The MFCs are going in a little over a week. I decided to tempt fate at the auction. I have 4 nasty roos, all are bantam Cochins and 3 are MFCs. I just don't want to deal with it. My nasty gander is going in my freezer, I have a mean roo to cull and Beakman, my mottled may go, too. He flogged the crap out of my son the other day. He was fine for 1.5yrs and now all of a sudden he's a compete *****. I love bantam Cochins, but so far, I am not thrilled with the boy's attitudes. Yeah, yeah... "They are supposed to be sweet". Haven't met a sweet one yet. As soon as they know what a female is and what they are supposed to do, the testicles impede their brains - just like men.

I just wish someone would have wanted them as a flock. So many nice birds...

Oh jeez...I am getting ready to hatch 14 MFCs for the start of a project and sure hope I don't get any mean guys. I have 2 very young girls who love the chickens and I have to get rid of any that don't mix well with my family. I'm sorry to hear of your poor luck with them!! :(

O, and usually when I sell at an auction I get around $10 a piece after commission. You don't have any plans of selling them individually do you? If you ship I could probly find some people willing to pay $10- $20 a piece plus shipping. There are a couple I would like to get as well especially the smutty buff columbian.

i'd love to have them all, but i'm nowhere near you, and without transportation it's just not feasible to ship that many birds.
