Hi all.
I noticed some posts about entering MF's in competition, and it brought up an interesting (to me) question... I live in CT and there are not a lot of MF's around that I know of. I rarely see them at the fairs. In fact, this year I have been to two fairs and seen exactly ONE MF bantam cochin. I think it was the same one as the fairs are near one another. On his cage card he was listed as "Mottled". Well, it was obvious (to me) that he was in fact a MF (project, as his color was nowhere near obvious) , not mottled, so I was wondering what the proper way would be to enter a bird. Do you mark the color as Mille Fleur, Calico, or just write AOV?

Those roosters are gorgeous! I'm glad you brought up the issue of large/ small combs. On the Cochins Int site there is an online show and partial evaluations have been posted. One of the judges most frequent comments was that the combs & /or wattles were TOO SMALL.

I'm having an issue with "thumbprint" combs in some of my roos, which this judge has also pointed out in several entries. This is where the blade of the comb twists a little.
This is our fair week and I paid close attention to the cochins of course, in the Black entries there was only one bird who did not have it. I talked to a prominent breeder in our area and he said yes, it's a fault, but not a big one as far as points go.

I don't like the big combs, personally. At some point I think they are to big and drown the bird's head. I want to see the structure of the head and not the comb. I do have the thumbprint in some of my boys. I swear the large comb does it - like ruffing because there is to much comb to squeeze in such a small space. Combs only count for 2pts, I believe. As long as there are no side sprigs and they aren't floppy, I don't count them out as breeders.

Sorry about all the questions. I'm wanting to get into this breed and color and planning to buy some from Rebecca. So is this color like in the standard? Is inbreeding ok? Too much white or too much brown a bigger problem ? Thanks !

So it's ok to inbreed?
most poultry breeding systems use some form of inbreeding or line breeding... inbreeding would be parent to offspring, or brother to sister... linebreeding usually skips a generation or 2, like breeding a pullet to her uncle or grandfather. bob blosl has a couple articles on 'rotational line breeding' which you might look at... (just google blosl line breeding you'll find them).
