Mille Cochin Info

Ok, here's a little video of my newest babies. I will release it to y'all even though I think I sound wierd

Im not crazy about the roo but that's all I had at the time. Im swapping him out with some better ones soon. He is the result of a nice Matt's mottled hen with a beautifully marked Lynne roo. He is pretty much all black and I kept hoping some brassiness would pop out but, it never did. What Im really shocked about is how light some of these chicks are .... ? I crossed him to a few super nicely marked hens from Lynne.. they are just gorgeous... so happy, still

Thanks, L.

I also have a couple chicks growing out from Josh and some nice typed birds from Tom I picked up a couple weekends ago so, THE PROJECT is in full throttle

and my beautiful cochin duplex has transformed into a quadraplex! Hopefully, after chickenstock and selling some grow outs that won't measure up, I can narrow down to two roos and 6 or so hens.

Anyway, here's the clip

Erin - what a neat video!! I love the walk-thru! And of course not to mention all the gorgeous birds! You are reaping the rewards of your careful selection - I hope everyone is paying attention.

When I was picking up my birds from Ralph aka Tate he told me straight up that some people tried to shortcut the color by using d'uccles in the very beginning and years later had problems with muffs and beards showing up on the cochins - he was explicite about only using cochins to improve the color patterning. He also warned against using certian patterns as the additional barring is next to impossible to breed out. So the d'uccle idea is absolutely what some of them did.

Totally awesome birds! I love your video and want to steal all the pretty Mille Fleurs!
I love the tour and the different patterns are so lovely. There are quite a few I hope to get from my crossing of birds like what you have.
Nicely done on everything!

You don't sound weird! We always think that when we hear our own voices outside of our own body.

Beautiful girls but, hate to bust your bubble

See how narrow those bodies are and how the feathers on that toosh go inward instead of fall down like a waterfall... that's what Im talking about. I really don't think anyone is exempt from this though... except for those who are beginning their birds right now from SQ cochin stock.. so don't feel bad.

Thanks for the compliments... definitely a work in progress. Just keep trying to work on it and it will get there... that's what I keep saying.

AMEN! I know I don't sound the best, half the time when I hear myself talking it sounds not as good as I hear it from inside myself, and once I was described as a male fran drescher(sp?)! that has since gone away, and sometimes if I laugh wrong I sound like Peter Griffin!

I love your coop setup! Eventually I will be adding a level onto what I currently have build for our birds and will be incorporating that with the brooder above and the growout below, that is awesome!!

I am aware that they are still a "work in progress" . We will get there won't we

quoting BluffCountryShepherdess" We spent many hours together that day and he showed me a lot about selecting for quality (nobody had ever mentioned wing sets or split wings, or correct combs, beyond the 5 points, width of feathers or SO many other things that I didn't realize I was supposed to be looking for!"
Nancy, did your source happen to mention an age when we can check juveniles for split wing? I could tell on an adult certainly but wonder if I can save feed/time by identifying it earlier and cull the split wings.

Scratcheswithchickens--your youngster's pic came thru and looks very nice. Seems to show good shape at a young age (plus color)!

For cochin shapes check the Cochins International site and breeders with lots of show points. They have a broadness from chest to the tail-- short backs (as if no length there at all) and volleyball shaped. If we can get our mille fleur cochins (in someone's lifetime--not mine but I'll enjoy the ride and help contribute)
