Erin, you are right, some of the partridge colored chicks do end up with the best pattern. Notice this girl has the "best & most Mille Fleur D'Uccle patterned breast" , but she is partridge based.

See how alike the feather pattern on the breast of this MF D'Uccle roo is similar to the MFC above? Also the coloring is very close on the MFC.

You are correct, the Partridge color could have been introduced in previous breedings from other breeders. I was just commenting that I, personally, had never used Partridge. I also have never introduced anyone else's lines into my breeding program apart from the original MFC roo I purchased 4 years ago. I started with him & bred to Buff Columbian hens to establish my line.

So far I have not had partridge to show up on mine but I have introduced new blood and may come across it on down the line. I am getting some awesome chicks lately and I feel I am making a bit of headway. I have never been partial to partridge but I did read that that was a typy Cochin and that is why a breeder used it. trying to keep that type and get the pattern right is always a challenge.

Mille fleur is one of the most complex varieties to breed for. It is a combination of many genes that, when put together in different ways can create colors and patterns other than mille. I would suspect you could breed for golden laced, golden penciled, partridge and other things from the milles. I don't think a partridgey looking bird is a terrible thing that must be "bred out" As a matter of fact, there are some breeders currently using partridge to improve type in their mille fleur cochins right now and I suspect they will have something dynomite to show us real soon. It's just that we need to get to a point where our birds breed true and meet the standard.

I don't think Ralph is an expert by any means

and certainly not a geneticist... neither am I but, if you want some REAL information, I would contact Krys, tadkerson or blackdotte here on BYC and get the real scoop. There are a few more genetic gurus on here but, I can't think of them right now. Until then, preach what you know to be true or at least from someone who knows what they're talking about.

I say, every thing that can be bred in, can be bred out, if you have the right combo to outcross on. I haven't seen anyone with super typey clear wheaten cochins, in bantam or LF, or I'd be all OVER that outcross, believe me!

I'm just glad to see so many people joining in to help broaden the gene pool and help make the best of what we have. The more people working on it and sharing pics, trading eggs, selling eggs and getting new enthusiasts, it can only be good for the variety. Sooner or later, hopefully they will become an accepted variety to show some day. Some day.... sigh... for now, we breed, sell, hold back, outcross, trade and hope for improvements every year.

The rooster has GOT to have the best disposition of any rooster I have had, very very sweet boy.
