You hatch out hundreds of eggs every month? I've heard about chicken math, and read about people talking here about their chicken "addiction," but that for someone like me who can only have a handful (in town) it makes my head swim! Even if you keep some for showing - and I've seen that you have beautiful birds - is there that big of a market for people buying cochins? WOW!

No, I hatch for myself.
If I can sell my "rejects" that is fine but often I wind up eating the beautiful roosters and just putting extra hens in a huge pen. Huge meaning approximately a quarter acre. Their small eggs go to the church food pantry for the poor people.

I am slowing down on hatching right now because I am tired of cleaning brooders. I work the farm by myself and that means feeding, watering, mowing the grass and building the pens and the usual maintenance. I fall into bed exhausted every night and am up at daylight starting all over again. Chick brooders take a lot of time to clean every day, even if on wire. I don't use shavings as that has not worked well for me, I actually like to clean them. Hopefully I will not hatch after Oct. at all for myself. However, I hatch for a few others to help cover my cost with the power bill and chick starter.

Yes, my chicken math is way out there but at the peak of this summer I had about 700 chicks and chickens plus ducks. I am getting down now with filling the freezer and selling some. I am hoping to hit the 500 mark in the next few weeks.

And I don't show. I don't care to pay someone to give me their opinion of a standard I can read for myself. If I like it, I keep it. If I don;t, I get rid of it. I breed to please myself and no one else. I am lucky that some others like what I like.
