Mille Cochin Info

Mine are certainly all over the place in color and pattern, just look at those 2 boys in my post. I try to have patience with that. It seems mine are holding together on good foot feathering, wings, top lines on some but mostly the boys and I get nice full cushions, wide backs and chest. Just not very good color and very little pattern.

I had one roo that was looking good for a month or so and I put him aside with a note to check on later. I looked at him yesterday and yuck. His chest was well patterned as a kid but he had too much red over his saddle and hackles. Now he is almost completely red. Where did those pretty feathers go? And his type is just not very good so I will sell him with a few extra girls or he will go to freezer camp.

I don;t mind feeding the girls for ages because they lay eggs. I give all those small eggs to the church food pantry and know they help someone but I can't feed a ton of roos and they really cause more stress on the whole farm with so many. I am not one to put mine in pens . There is a lot of food on the farm they can harvest themselves until I put out supper each night. Then they all go into the barn in the stall assigned them and get closed up for the night. I really have way too many roos. I have a few stalls with over 200 roos in them each night. they get along well for the most part but they are still pretty young.

Anyhow, I got off the subject.
I do like to keep the MFC birds until at least 4-5 months old. You didn't say how old your little girl was when you discovered how nice she was becoming. I would have guessed at least 4 months? I have gotten a few surprises after that age but not many. I hope I am getting better at knowing who is a keeper and who isn't at around 2 months but I still hold on to them for several months.
I have a few calico looking kids now that I hope will be typy. That project took a backseat for a long while. I have always needed more white in my MFC projects and hope now with the Mottleds helping out I can get better chevrons.
But as you say, another 10 years. I don't even want to think of that.

I haven't seen anything from Lynne in a while. Has anyone heard how her program is coming along this year? Or did I miss a recent post by her?

Sigh!

I love that fluffy girl, Amy.
200 roos! I will not complain about too many roos any more. I have only 1 acre and too many predators. I teach inner-city Middle School and thought I was tough but can't cull my own birds

Amy,

Thank you so much for thinking of me~! Erin, thank "you" for your nice comments on my auctions.

I have to admit, I have been so busy that getting pics posted has been on the back burner. But now that Fall is finally in the air, I have some time to show you the results of my Spring hatch. Here are pics of some of the 5-6 month old pullets & cockerel that are on my "keeper" list

Amy, I'm still not up to par with you on type but it is something that has been instilled in my mind (by you) for 2012. I hope to gain some big strides in that dept. next year.

Here are pics of two sets of chicks just recently hatched. I am now starting to get consistency in my chick down colors. I just had another hatch yesterday & they look exactly the same. Sure hope I'm on to something

I have so much to learn about this breed and color variety, but I'm very excited to be starting out with these beautiful little birds.

Beautiful birds everyone!

I so wish I could afford to get more right now but with the cost of feed skyrocketing I am trying to control myself. And the fact that I am working myself into the ground to care for all I have. I really would love to have some of your beauties. You have plenty of type in your birds.

I do not go into the BST section often because I get my key board all wet from seeing birds I want. That pair that you have up is simply fantastic. I could do so much with them!

Amy,

I certainly hear you about the "WORK" involved with caring for all the birds~!

It seems that just as I get finished in the morning, it is evening & it's time to start all over again

However, as with me, you don't trust anyone else to do it. (As "if" I had someone else waiting with helping hands

) Seventy is right around the corner for me so keeping up can be a daunting task

Talk about the price of feed~!!!!
hu.gif
I have customers who want only "organic" fed birds...50 lbs is $29.95. I feed in excess of 50 lbs a day & mix my own feed & grains. I couldn't afford to have chickens if I only fed "organic". I wonder if all the bugs these "organic" fed birds eat are organic as well

Fortunately all my chickens (except my breeder cages) have the run of the 5 1/2 acres so anything they can gleen from the mulch pile or the vegetable garden sure helps with feeding. I remember when you could buy layer pellet for $8.95 for 50 lbs. Now I'm lucky if I can find it for less than $16.00. Wonder where all this will end? I guess I shouldn't worry as I probably won't been around to see it anyway

Thanks again for all the nice compliments. Your birds are awesome. Wish we lived closer so we could help each other on this project. I'm sorta alone here in CA........

I recently got a new cockeral for my MFC project and just thought I would share He is a black mottled but on the darker side I know he looks black but he does have some mottling on his feet I got him so I could possibly remove some of the white the hens get when they get older It may not work possibly due to the columbian but gonna try anyway He is 5-7 months old and has a lot of filling out to do but I think he is going to be a beautiful bird when he matures I have a real nice BM hen that I could use him on if this dont work Nough of my rambling
