Ralphie, did we grow up together?! It seems like our families talked alike. My family also called it a swatter but I knew it was spelled swather so your question threw me. As for the witness tree, I've never heard that before but our land was lined by either fence or road or swamp so we had no use for one. My uncle's place, however, had an old post that everyone just called the line post. I believe there was a fence there at one time but it was all removed except the corner post.I was just giving sample questions. those are not a quiz you are suppose to make the quiz bantie!
A witness tree is a tree close to a section line corner that is blazed or scarred with where the corner marker is. We had one here. I have no idea if it is true, but my Dad always use to tell us it was illegal to cut the tree. The one here is still here after the farm was turned into a sub-division. It was an old gnarly tree when I was a kid, I cannot believe it would last longer.
Klopklop I wish it was a typo, it was me guessing at the spelling. We called it swatting, everyone around her did. either that or the H is silent. Swatting was done just before "shocking' I remember that from when I was really young before we got a combine.
Are you going to tell me it is not shocking but Shockhing?
