Minnesota!

Hey everybody! Its been a while since I've been on. Hows everyone been?
We finally finished harvest up here.
Good news, the girlfriend tonight has asked me if we can get more chickens! She wasnt all for the idea at the beggining but now she wants more. Uffda what have I done.

Welcome back!

Nice plan tricking the GF into getting you new chicks! What kind do you think you will get?

Ralphie, I am with you on the pizza. Was just to Sammy's in West Duluth and to my way of thinking there is no better.
All of this prose re alcohol consumption has me thinking I am in Superior,Wi or on Duh Range.
I am not a complete abstainer but consume very little of it. Too much alcohol leads to bad and potentially life changing or ending situations. I am not lecturing. Just saying for some it is filled with bad memories.
My son chased a coyote out of the yard the other evening while still broad daylight. Too bad he came around the corner of the garage without being armed. The son that is not the coyote.
It is a bad time of year regarding varmints. They know winter is on the way, and they want to fatten up before it gets harder to find food.
Unless a person has unfilled coop space it is a bad time of year to be adding birds, unless Ralphie has some for sale.
Ralphie, if you want to hatch more next year I know where you can get an old GQF incubator without releasing any cash.
Judy might allow that type of additional incubator?

I was thinking about this since EJB wrote the above post.

Many, many moons ago, I picked up a hitchhiker on I35. It was a cold rainy day. The guy was around 25-30 and it was obvious he was missing an arm. When he got in the car I noticed he could not bend his leg and his face was solid scars. ( yea, I know the dangers of picking up hitch hikers, but they did not apply to me, some of you know why) (and I was carrying)

We talked some and he was a nice enough guy, and I being overly nosey asked him what happened to his leg. He said he was in a car accident on the range and he lost his arm, his knee and his spleen when the car rolled over.

I asked if he was alone, he said no. I asked if he was driving he said he had no idea as he was drunk when it happened. Now he did smell of beer and MaryJane, but not overpoweringly so.

I said without thinking, “ that **** booze can be some bad stuff”

He looked at me like I had just committed blasphemy and said “ Well, it ain't never hurt me any”.

( I am sure the implications of the double negative slipped right by this future Rhodes Scholar.)

True story..

Ralphie, nice photo of just part of your flocks.
Lest some get the wrong idea, I do not think that the young man you wrote the story about is typical of the IQ on Duh Range. He seems slightly more confused than most. As you may guess I did not grow up on the Minnesota Iron Range, but in a more civilized area of the state.

I did not mean to imply that at all, I am sorry!

I was just talking about how some people can ignore the problems booze abuse can cause. Where he came from was immaterial..

Sorry..

Thanks EJB. Those are all CX's that people say are lazy and slobs. They are so great and watching them chase bugs is so fun. It is amazing how active they are if given a chance.

Blanchranch one of those turkeys has your name on it. You get first choice, as you're the first to ask. I might try to talk you into Big bird if I can keep from giving him medication. Right now I have just separated him and am giving him Probiotics and Vinegar. I will not sell a bird if I have to give it meds. (not counting deworming hens).

But if you don't want him because he was sick I understand, I am just worried DW and I might have trouble eating him as we have gotten too close to him. It is her fault, I told her not to name him!
I will take whatever you give me and I am sure it will be the best I have ever had. Thank you!

I just want to share this picture, it was a tender moment, my DW almost cried. We sat with the CX's tonight for chicken TV, as the others are all locked up because of the predator and my moving them to their winter coops. The BBW ( big bird) was out most the day I put him with the CX's so he would not get picked on while he recovers, He stayed near the waterer all day ( the homemade waterer out of the barrels). He would pick a little at food and drink but did not wander far. He looks better tonight than he did this morning. While we were watching them Big Bird sat down and just kind of stared at us. This little CX walked over looked at Big bird and sat down right next to him. Then stared at him. It was so cute and my DW got it on her IPhone. Sorry the picture is so bad, but heck it was her phone not a camera.
oh my gosh, how sweet is this?

Well, I just know that most of the bad decisions in my life were aided by alcohol. So for the last 20 years I've been on a 1-2 drink limit, if I do decide to imbibe. This works for me. I figured out long ago my shut off switch is broke, no good. :/

Its almost impossible to say no to more chickens. She wants silkies... I dont know if they will work well with what I got going on here. She's more drawn to the "cuteness" of them than anything. We are going to use the fall/winter to get set up and try to raise some CX next spring.
