Minnesota!

Yes. I am. Sadie is into chicken bowling I suspect when mother is not watching.

How did you round them all up? Or is it part of the Craig's list deal that they bring their running shoes and long handled fish nets?

Guineas be gone! LOL.

Your yard is going to be so quiet....

This morning, while driving to work, I passed a semi loaded with small cages stuffed with live chickens.
It was distressing.

Hope everyone is having a good week.

For the record, Loretta does not have me fooled. She is sitting at my feet worshiping me. She is still worried she will not see October 11th. She thinks sucking up she will skip camp day, even though I told her she would be around a long time.

Now because it seems to be some sort of fashion faux pas to wear black socks with y shorts and sandals, I have put on white socks today. Hopefully that will leave the critics speechless and preserve my sense of peace without worrying about what I am wearing.

Minne Are you from NY? or did your brother and Mother move there? So no popples in NY?

People, start posting in the mornings or late nights. I need something to read with my coffee.
Yes, I am from the Buffalo NY area. Left when I was 21 and joined the Navy, met hubby and landed here after we both left that chapter.
There must be POPLAR trees in NY since my family is familiar with them, but I don't remember. I didn't develop my fascination with trees and flowers and insects and birds until I 'settled down' and matured. I know, some never actually settle down, Ralphie ;)

I was apparently getting tired when I was on last night. I had taken the 29 CRX in to process. Yes, I take them to get done for me. It would take me FOREVER to get them done here. It is relatively cheap to take them to Dennison ($2.25 per bird, $2.50 after I had them pull the livers too). They come back bagged and freezer ready. We decided to cut up a dozen of them and bag the parts separately for freezing, so it took a while. It is done though. I did end up selling 10 to friends who asked if I had any extras if they could get some. I defrosted the upright freezer a few days ago to fit the half pig in it, and discovered I still had plenty of whole chickens left, so I sacrificed the 10. They were a lot more consistent in size than I expected. I had quite a few more pullets than cockerels this time. The biggest was an ounce shy of 6#, I had 9 over 5, and the smallest was 4#3oz. That wasn't bad, but I know if I had gotten them from Texas or New Mexico, as I have the last couple of years through Stromberg's, they would have been bigger. That is okay though. With corn prices being down this year, therefore feed being down, I figured I put $1.96/lb into them, that includes processing, shavings, feed, cost of chicks. I charged $2.25/lb. Now to figure out the turkey prices.

Glad to hear your camp day went well. MY birds do not get a ride to camp day. They go to camp right here...

Which reminds me, I was thinking we should have a BYC Minnesota thread get together on Camp Day right here.

Everyone bring a knife and choice of beverage and for a fee of 5 bucks a bird, I will supervise your processing technique and offer constructive criticisms.

Where else could you learn and have fun visiting with everyone from here for that reasonable price.

Also I would allow you to take the neck bones home for broth!

I have never been to that part of NY. Someday with luck, I will get there. I have a BIL in NY but he is in Syracuse. When I have visited him we spend our time looking at OLD OLD cemeteries and the Revolutionary war places. If NY did not have NYC, it would be a great place to live

Small update from me before I go spend hours catching up:

Tractor not running right so hay is at a stand still. We are expecting rain tomorrow I think so they better figure out what is wrong!! Any bales they make off the land is less that I have to buy.
I have been canning. 24 pints of relish and 12 quarts of hamburger pickles in 2 days. Whew I am pooped!
We have started cleaning out the 2 stall garage that has about 13 families and 3 years of things in it. Still working on it but we are close to the end. Does that mean I actually get to use said building? I won't hold my breath but wouldn't it be nice?

Oh and the best part.......DNR called me today. The second set of tracks I emailed with the tape measure has them thinking I have a wolf on my hands. The conservation officer came out and snapped some pictures and we chatted. He said he will forward all my info and stuff to the federal wildlife management guy who will attempt to trap the wolf. He told me that just yesterday there were wolves taking more cattle about 30 miles from me. Sounds like it is getting problematic. I really hope I don't loose any of the cattle here.

Have a good day all!

I know this is not a sports discussion thread, unless Ralphie is relating play by play of his Guinea wrangling. Now what will you do to fill that exercise void Ralphie?
However I feel compelled to state that I found the performance of the Minnesota Vikings to be shockingly poor. I only watch NFL games for the entertainment value, as I believe the games are not completely legitimate. The Vikings were entertaining when they blocked the field goal attempt and when they recovered the dropped punt, and that was about it. I gave up on that game having any entertainment value shortly after the start of the 2nd quarter.
I am sure the Packer fans think it was a delightful game.

A lady I work with buys her chickens at a Asian market. She said they stink when they're butchering them because they've been so poorly taken care of. I guess they arrive stuffed in those small cages one on top of another. Makes me cringe a bit. I guess I just really, really like my chickens.

@ejb3810 , I wasn't sure if I was watching professional teams play last night or if it was the Middle School team down the road. My favorite part was when Bridgewater ran into his own lineman and got sacked! Lol

I do not watch sports. I am not that redneck yet. I use to have season tickets to the Vikings about 25 years ago. We would drive with a couple from Duluth to the metrodome to watch the Vikings lose about every two weeks.

Then Denny Greene traded the entire team, the future team and three firstborns for Hershel Walker. To me it was such a momentously stupid trade, I cancelled my tickets, and have not watched a game since. ( Yeah, I can get a tad stubborn, but I bet none of you knew that because I hide it so well).

EJB, I am thinking of keeping 3 guineas, I am hoping I don't. I will know what I did at 5 pm.

I need to run to town and get some lemonade! I am working on Broom landing zone ( otherwise known as my Wife's deck) again today and the heat is killing me. I need lemonade. ( Mikes Hard is my fave) I have peaches to add to it!

I tried letting Ethel out and she went right to the babies again. She let me pick her off the fence she was roosting on and carry her back without incident. I wish she would forget her babies.

BTW, I forgot to tell you how to sign up for the Camp Day school. Just answer here or a PM, I wonder I if I can take paypal for this scam,.. I mean school.

Ralphie-you picked a nice name for your beauty of a chicken!

We have a log splitter that goes vertical. It is a dream when you have those behemoth logs you can't lift. Love the log splitter!
DH also calls the tree popple not poplar. I was showing him chart after chart of BTUs and there was never a popple tree listed. Finally resorted to looking at pictures what do you know it is a poplar! :) and we have a huge wood stove in the house. Check out the Drolet Model# HT2000 that is what I have in my living room. LOVE IT!! and all the in laws were giving me heck when I picked this one over the brand they wanted. Turns out all they can do is give praise and several of them already are buying it. Hmmm must have done something right! Heats my whole house with no duct work about 2200 square feet on one level. It really heats like they say it does.
