Minnesota!

I think the box elder bugs are all on my grapes.....yuck.

For some reason, the orange beetles weren't so numerous this year. I hate it when they are in the house and leave those permanent little red dots everywhere.

But yesterday you LIKED the combine!  LOL!!!  Just wait in a couple of days when the wind really picks up.  That is what drives me nuts because then it is stuck all over on my fence and blowing all over our yard too. Lucky us, they planted beans around us this year, so we just get the beetles they kicked out this time

Nah it doesn't bother me and I knew it would happen but I'm just amazed at how quick it happened. If anything I'm looking forward to my flick getting out and gleaning the field now! May have to lure them out there the first time

That is funny, I had a similar thought after they took the beans off. But I know letting them out on that field right now is asking for trouble since there are critters just a couple hundred yards away who would love to munch them from the waterway and pond area.

hey you hunters and others who like wildlife too, DNR is trying to write some new rules about hunting, leadshot, small game, ducks/geese/crows, etc. This would make permanent the temp rules in effect. You can read them and comment about what you like or don't like. Get the rules drafts here: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/input/rules/rulemaking.html:

You have some time to comment. An administrative law judge reviews the comments, and they become part of a permanent record. Its your chance to have some input into the rules that will make a difference for hunters and others.

I have found when the government asks for input on new rules, it means they (bureaucrats) have decided on the new rules and are simply asking to make it seem they took public input. I know my nemesis "the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge" works that way. I just got a letter saying they were going to restore the refuge near me to a ecosystem present before the white man came here. Meaning they are cutting all red oaks and pine trees to establish an "oak savanna". Because there is not much of it. Never mind an "oak savanna is a transition area and never was a large ecosystem. Or never mind the oak savannas were mainly west of the Mississippi river and I am east of it.

And never mind an oak savanna is a wildlife dead zone. Except for a few ground squirrels and mice.

rant over..

To get rid of boxelder bugs you take a sprayer and fill with water and add a little dawn dish detergent. spray and they fall right down and die. Years ago we had them so bad I called the extension office and that is what they told me. Apparently the soap clogs up their breathing and they die. Sure enough they fell like sheets off of the house and laid in piles on the ground. We moved up north and only see a few now and again. It works. Give it a try.

If they come back I will try that. I prefer they get eaten by my birds.

True:). If I had birds back then I don't know they could have eaten them all. Besides, they were up to the peak of the house. the white siding looked black. It was gross. It's an alternative just in case someone has them where the birds aren't.
Good luck. Hopefully they taste good. To your birds that is.

@Coffee 1st I can't believe that no one answered your post in the Emergencies section!! It is a good thing we have such helpful veterans here on the Minnesota thread to help us when we need it!!
Thank you everyone for all the help and advice you have given over all the months I have been here. It truly is helpful to hear from everyone while us newbies are learning the ropes. I value and appreciate every ones opinion here and I mean that.
I totally agree i am very thankful to everyone here on the MN site. i would have probably been a wreck trying to figure this out on my own. Im surprised as well no one gave any comment on the emergency thread. good thing it wasn't a life or death situation. I LOVE my MN site and will stick here....So THANK YOU ALL for all the help....

I am guessing the birds eat them in a younger stage of development. I now what you mean by the black siding. They are horrible!

I wish they were more tasty to the birds. BTW the other day I had guineas on the peak of the 2 story part of the house. Maybe they were going for the high bugs!
