Minnesota!

I live in Cannon Falls Mn. Have 2 chickens and a rooster right now. Adding 5 ISA reds, 5 Americana's, and 6 Silver Laced Wyandottes this week. We lost most of our flock to a feral dog that broke down the door to the coop while we were at work and killed most of my birds.

How awful!
And welcome :)

Welcome cagilberts and violinplayer

Mom told me she happened to look out the kitchen window and saw a fox walking in front of our garage, then disappeared behind it.
Apparently the chickens did not make a sound.
My dad sent the dog out who immediately picked up the scent and went after it. She, of course, didn't catch it.

Am anxious to do a head account when I get home. They'll be penned up for a while and we'll leave the dog outside.

Hi violin player I'm in northern mn too. I've been luckier than I suppose I deserve.
Cagilberts --Hobby farm with ranging dogs on your property not belonging to you but killing your property deserves one phone call to the owner of the dog as fair warning. If they're feral and problematic that saves you on calling. But that dog will be back with a taste and there's only two ways to solve that problem. Strong coop and/or putting the dog down. What a nuisance to deal with it in your property though. Yuck.

I'd have a really hard time shooting a dog, but I understand completely the need to deal with the issue.
That anyone would let their dog go feral to that point is so bloody irresponsible.

Welcome! I am near owatonna, so not far away from you.

So, being in heat is bad?

It is when you expect the heifer to be preggers! She will go to market and the probably to someone's table. Too expensive to feed a girl over winter who isn't providing, right?
