I like that heated water bucket you posted. What I'm wondering - how many would you need for 35 chickens?

Yeah, that's way I figured I would ask here. I am going go cover my run 14'x24'x24'x16', and put Polly all the way around the sides. My chickens can go under my coop, so I will put straw bails around it. All my water is outside my coop right now and I would like to keep it that way. I like the idea of the nipples because the water should stay cleaner, waste less, so I shouldn't have to fill and clean it as often. The ones I got are spring loaded so the don't drip like the gravity one, that's why I figure if the water is warm enough they shouldn't freeze. What do you think? I could always add another pipe and a pump, then the water would be moving and not have a chance to freeze.

Something to think about when putting bales around your coop is how dark it gets under there = my coop is a converted (more or less) construction site trailer, so my flock uses the underneath as well. I also put bales around, but use old storm windows every now and then to allow natural light under there. much more pleasant for them, and easier for me to see what is going on there. I just wedge them in with the bales, and put some stakes to keep the windows upright.






hmmm thought I had some pics of it, but they must be on a different laptop.

anyway, its easy to do if you can scavage some old windows.

Hey, about roosters.....

Ralphie's creamer roo crowed after he had been here a few days. tentative crows. but then, he let loose and crowed multiple times in a row. a hen walked over and semi charged him, no contact, roo backed off, and......I think he has been silent ever since.

He is eating, roosting with the flock, behaving normally, but no crowing. I think Ralphie said he is about 4 months old?

One of the benefits of roo's is that wonderful crowing. Do I just have to give it time? Should I be worried somethings going on? Or maybe he just feels too"junior" yet?

I don't think I've ever had a silent rooster unless there was another rooster there.
