Minnesota!

GUYS! i think i found out what is ailing my leghorn!  she has been baffling me.  alert but wont stand up.... she has a poopy bum from sitting down and pooping so we brought her up for a bath.  DW held and i scrubbed.  I went to wash her feed a lo and behold, right in the middle of one of her little foot pads is a black scabby bit :(  i peeled it off and squeezed out some yellowish gook :sick   I bandaged it up with some neosporin for now.  I made her another scrambled egg and she ate the whole thing! so I made her a pumpkin puree omlet plus some apple slices and a bowl of chicken crumbles.

Any advice on how to keep after her foot besides keeping clean bandages and cream on it?  I will try and do some googling on bumblefoot but any advice is always appreciated.

I think minnie had dealt with bumblefoot. Ralphie too, was there a hard "kernal" in there? I would maybe soak her feet in Epsom salts.

Her foot looked better but has lots of healing to go.  We put new cream and bandages on.  She is still pretty smelly though.  is there something i can bathe her in to get the funk out?  we have washed off as much poo as we can and trimmed some of the butt fluff but still.. pew!  dish soap?  shampoo of some kind?

Dawn dish soap. That is what they use on wild birds that get into oil and such...

hmm. is the smell coming from the foot? Or just all over? Do you think it is a poop smell? Sometimes illness makes a hen stink, and no amount of washing helps because it is a whole body illness thing.

I would soak her in epsom salts, it will be good for the foot and for the rest of her as well. After that, perhaps dishsoap or shampoo, but suds can be hard to get out of feathers.

Bumblefoot would not cause a hen to be laying on her side unless, and it is a big if, the infection was systemic. I would think she would have passed by now if that were the case....so I still think something might be wrong with her that isn't the bumblefoot....sorry, just IMHO.

I don't have much of an update on Goldie. Spent more time with my granddaughter than planned, so yesterday got home after dark. Goldie tipped over the water container so was sitting on a very soggy towel.

I got the cage cleaned up and replaced the towel and newspaper with soft dried grass clippings I had collected over the summer for use in winter nestboxes. She was talked a little, looks like she may have eaten a little of the gamebird crumbles.

She ate some dried grass this morning while I was setting up her food for the day. Won't be til Sat til I will see her in daylight... we are on day 11 of recovery.

There was yellow/white 'cheese' but no hard kernel, unless it came off with the scab and I didn't notice it.

She looked much better today. Took a few tentative steps when I turned her lights on and ate some scrambled eggs.

Good morning everyone!

A fabulous four day project-filled weekend awaits me. I'll also be filming my own episode of "Breaking Broody".

One more week until The Force Awakens...
LOL, Breaking Broody.... I'm surprised my super-broody hasn't been broody yet this winter with the warm temps.

I see some people out in California are already camped out to get in to the movie.

lol, maybe I didn't have enough coffee, but what the heck are you talking about?

My broody Cochin will be returning to the land of the living this weekend. I'll be around to supervise the process.

The Force Awakens is the new Star Wars film, it takes place after Return of the Jedi.

We have tickets for a 19 December show, the previews make me giddy. I'm such a nerd.

I have been keeping an eye on Biddy as I can tell she is thinking about it. Fortunately each night she goes up on the roost.
