Minnesota!

ditto! muddy, slushy, yucky. It has snowed, sleeted, rained, and poured today.
safe travels to anyone who had to drive somewhere today.
foxy hope you made it home safely !

erlibird, thanks for the idea about oatmeal, I have plenty of that. I could even grind it a little so it isnt so big.

funny enough, I just got up the gumption to open the envelope ever so c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y anticipating worms everywhere, when out come some.........socks! Not the mealworm delivery!

When I first got my mealworms I did 1 bin wheatbran and 1 with oatmeal and eventually went to just wheat bran, but the oatmeal works too.
Hope your wormies get there soon

Just so I understand, but live worms, get a 10 gallon tank, bran and oats, some fruit and let nature take it's course?

Pretty much.
I use a tote/bin with wheat bran, usually I feed them carrots. Potato cut up or give them the peels, celery stuff like that. I don't know if they'd like citrus fruit but apple they like. They like a tp tube or part of a brown paper bag to be under. They like the dark.

We started with a fast moving thunderstorm this morning at around 8:00-8:30. The wind blew in so hard and fast, I thought I would have to check for tornadoes! Then we got hail, then we got rain, then we got sleet, then we got snow, all with wind like crazy. All that and I was cleaning more pens and moving all the birds around. I put all the oddball hens in one big outdoor pen that is a double run I won't use with the Cornish inside (they don't like going in and out the chicken doors and don't need that space anyway.), I went out after moving and cleaning elsewhere, and half of the little B***&es flew over the top of the divider and in with the Ameraucanas. Well, I may be using that Ameraucana rooster with them, so that wasn't a big deal, but just a pain to put them back over.
I had a Thinsulate hate with ear flaps and ear covers over that on and my ears still froze. I was hoping to cut the spot for one of the doors I am moving and get it moved over today, but not with this dang wind.
I am getting 6-8 large eggs a day now from the older hens. I still can't get over how big my Welsummer eggs are for being the smallest breed I have. I need to get some nest boxes in that mixed pen.
So, I put my dum dum bachelors in the hoop I just finished. They are not smart enough to use the roost. I have a 9' board across the whole thing for them and only 4 or 5 of them were using it. I want to find a solar powered light to mount in the pen so they can have more than just the dim light coming in the plastic. I may change out to use clear roofing panels on the south (or did I already say that before?).
Looking at the forecast, we are going to get lots colder this week, but Sunday is calling for 40 again.
Yes, this slick, nasty, muddy stuff is such a pain in the butt. I could do without it. It is time like these that I wish I had a skid loader to scrape all the mucky crap off along the pasture side of the building/runs. It would be easier to run out to the compost pile too. I almost got stuck with the lawn tractor today taking one load out.

Made it home safely, had one close call though. I ride a bus to work on nasty weather days, but I still have to drive about 15 miles to get to the bus stop. I caught an early ride with a co-worker back to my vehicle and just after we passed a snow plow going the other direction on the highway her truck started fishtailing. We were going sideways down the highway for a little bit, but she didn't over-react and made a nice recovery. Whew!

The girls were already all roosted up when I got home, they were having none of this:

The homestead, it's a beautiful sight

y'all are pretty quiet this morning! but then, everyone is busy at holiday times. I like that just about everyone has a holiday sometime around this time of the year. We all get to be festive together!

Goldie update Day 17: ugh. I shooed the girls out of that part of the coop and opened Goldie's cage. It took her a while to decide to come out, and she didn't go far. Eyed the roosts, and tried to get to one that is almost 6'. She got about 4 feet in the air and didn't make it. Hasn't used her wings in more than 2 weeks, and those muscle injuries....She settled into the hay, so I took the chance to clean her kennel while she was resting. replaced the soiled grass with fresh dried grass. Thankful that I dried some this summer from mowing, it is perfect for her. Hay would be too pokey, shavings would stick to wounds....towels look gross in 3 minutes. So dried grass, I'm never going to be without it now.

she came over to watch while I was cleaning the kennel. Probably only walked five feet the whole time she was out. I inspected her wounds, she struggled like crazy. She has some new feather quills growning in bare skin. There are some scabs coming loose. I think one of the huge puncture wounds has too much nustock packed into it, it is almost like a cast. The wound is kind of bulging out so I am going to bathe her later today and see if I can get that to loosen up and come out. No heat, no drainage, but her feathers near the big packed wound look a little greasy, almost wet. It could be the nustock coming out, since I had poured the oily part right into the wound. The nustock on top maybe formed a cap or plug....

She will not be out of the kennel by xmas, that is for certain.

She was exhausted from struggling to get loose, and didn't move when I released her. But, no panting (indicates pain).

So clearly, she has a long ways to go still.
I hope the struggling was a good work out for her. Sounds like she needs it. Those deep wounds need to drain so they heal from the inside out. It can cause problems if it heals on the outside first. I know this to be true with people anyway so I am sure the same holds true for chickens.

That is a beautiful sight! Doesn't it just make you happy to see your home and the beautiful setting? I like the old fashioned yellow tinged lights. Those blue tinged led lights, it just looks cold and institutional to me. The warm glow out on the snow...
Is that your driveway that the dog is on? or the road out front?

glad you made it home safely. bet your heart was pumping when she was fishtailing!
