Minnesota!

What a beautiful morning!!!  It is only 3 degrees, but the hoar frost on everything and the ice fog are just gorgeous.  It is hard to be in a bad mood when it is so pretty outside!

I hope everyone has a wonderful day!

It was so hard going back to work!

Yesterday I sat on a stump in the chicken pen and watched chickens. They love scratching in the straw, especially when I throw some scratch grain in. It gets them out of the coop.

I was surprised and very happy to see Pia and Inga, my two Swedish Flower hens out. Pia's back is almost completely healed after the rooster onslaught.

20 eggs yesterday! Am getting hatching fever big time!

I never noticed before that as it warms up on these frosty days, that the frost expands on everything before it starts falling. It looks like it is snowing right now where it is all coming off the trees and the sun is brightly shining. These are the winter days I love. Of course, it will all be ruined when the wind starts blowing later :p

I am itching to start getting things ready for starting seeds, but it is way too early, I know. So, maybe later I will be sorting my seeds and seeing about what I need to order and get that rolling. I am so glad we planted garlic again. My husband was a little reluctant because we haven't had enough time to properly care for gardens the last couple of years. I can't stand being without our own garlic to cook with though. We go through a lot of it since I put it in just about everything I cook. My favorite pig-down snack or light mean is toasted flat bread with hummus, garlic cloves and hot peppers on it. I swear I could eat it every single day and never get sick of it! There is this hummus made by a restaurant in Iowa City that can be bought in HyVee stores in Iowa that I beg my husband to bring back every time he goes down to work in Iowa. I just can't get enough of it. I need to look into growing my own chick peas so I can make my own ;) Mmmmmmmm And homemade flatbread or pitas are just too yummy! Dang it, I am making myself hungry!

@Minniechickmama the trees were beautiful today with the freezing fog like a painting. The sun here ruined the crystals. Still searching for bbs orps.. I don't know why I liked em but I did.I been soo busy with the holidays tat I haven't been around. But.. I now have chicks on the brain in the new year.

love the video, scandia, just what I needed for a break during a stressful work day.  I swear watching chickens beats meditation!

Thank you! And I'm so glad it helped :). I love the sounds chickens make. Try to imagine the gossip..

When a rooster makes the growl/purr sound is that an alarm signal?

Sad news... My dear old cluck LuLu passed away at the old age of 5½ years old. She passed away last night on the nest. She must not have had enough feathers to stay warm since she just started molting.

Well, I put away the little heated waterer and kennel cage too soon. Goldie is fine, but I came home to find a 2 year old buff orpington nesting/roosting in the hatchway to the coop.

She can't stand. I popped her in on a clean bed of hay in the corner. Tomorrow when it is light out I will take a look and see - I am amazed she was able to make it into the coop since it involves a good jump up and a long ramp. Poor girl!

I am guessing she sprained something? Didn't really do a good inspection, she is calm and in the dark with just my cell phone for light....it will wait til morning especially since likely there is nothing I can do anyway. I did see there was no blood, no obvious injuries to her legs or feet. Darn it, I just finished with Goldie.
