Minnesota!

Need some chick advice...

I like to give my chicks electrolites and vitamin mix in their water. Fleet farm is out, nobody else around here sells it I have half a package but it is left over from last springs chicks....

do i give them the old stuff? do i just skip it? I may go back to fleet farm tomorrow and see if they restocked

thoughts?

If you kept the old stuff dry, it should be okay. However, I would look at alternating the Probiotics for chicks with the vitamins. I have noticed that when I use just the vitamin/electrolytes, I get lots of pasty butt, but if I use it alternately with the Probiotics, it is just one or two in a batch. I never thought I would like using it, but the little packs of Sav-a-Chick are nice since they are already portioned and you can get the packs with both the electrolytes and probiotics. I got mine from FF the other day. They are probably running out all over now with so many people getting their chicks this month.
If you don't have Probiotics, then put raw apple cider vinegar in the water for them, but I would alternate that with the electrolytes and fresh water.

I'm trying to figure out a combo coop - part of it using the warehouse caging from blanch and part hog panel hoop. And haven't figured out the brooder inside the new to be built coop.

A straight hoop coop would be easier for me to figure out as I am definitely spatially challenged. But the warehouse caging is so secure and there wouldn't be any need to reinforce it with hardware cloth.

any why don't critters climp the hoop coops and come in thru the tops?

Some coon do climb in the top of runs, and even will chew through chicken wire or pull it up at corners to get into the run. I have had customers who this has happened to.

This is what I used for a couple of years in the garage, something like this in a breakdown style might work for your brooder.

But in June, you won't need it for long, it will get hot out quick. Depending on what you put over the hoop, and I would cover it some on top for shade, it could attract more heat for the chicks.

Yes warm water. i just put the sink on a slow trickle then would hold her bum under it. she seemed to like it. then a blowdry after to keep her form getting chilled
Okay, thanks.

Soaking to keep her clean is good and to help relax her, which part of the problem was her pushing so much. Some people I have heard use Preparation H on them too to help take down the swelling.
So it was caused by her pushing eggs out too hard? Does that mean she shouldn't ever lay again?

The flurries have been blowing for about an hour but nothing sticking on the ground yet. I think the worst of it is coming later today. @KlopKlop
I bet you are getting more than I am over here. I did my feed run last night because I ran out of chick feed doing the chores yesterday, otherwise wouldn't have needed to go until tonight, but it was a good thing, I guess. I also picked up 12 nice clean pallets for building a new coop in one of our big gardens we are going to split. I talked DH into letting me rotate the chickens back and forth from one year to the next. If I put New Hampshires down there, he will like the idea even more (they are HIS favorites) but it will likely be Buckeyes and NH together, pullets/hens only.

@mnbrewdude got his little Buckeye ladies yesterday. It was an exciting day for his family. It is always fun to share such a wonderful breed with someone who hasn't had them before, and in his case, are just starting with chickens.

Thanks to @destiny_56085 I discovered my beautiful Blue Silkie pullet I hatched last fall and was going to keep to breed and show, has a split wing. GRRRR! My next door neighbor was over to get some plastic feed bags and see the little babies in the brooder. I picked up that Blue Silkie for her to see a grown one, and you would think they were star crossed lovers! I have never had a chicken snuggle, but this one snuggled right up under her chin and was nuzzling up to her like a cat or dog might do!!!! Then she held her back and talked to her, and that chicken, you would think it was talking back to her! So, guess where she is going? Her name is now Zsa Zsa.

feed bags, I hate hate hate the poly woven ones. not good for a danged thing, they deteriorate fast in the sunlight, the little strips come apart. I wish I had an idea of what to do with them besides trashing them.

THe paper sacks are my favorite. THey are great liners for the shelves that the flock roost on - topped with hay they are easy to clean up, and decompose so you can throw them in the garden.

I have a little brinsea brooder panel that I won on a byc contest (lucky me) but it is only good for about 6 chicks. SO I will use that and a mama heatingpad broody cave for the 25 chicks. Minnie you are right it should be easier with the warmer temps in june.

still tinkering in my mind with the coop ideas. trying to do it on the cheap.

@Minniechickmama , what is a split wing?

And I'm pretty sure you're right on about that white silkie of mine. I think she laid a little white egg while I was on vacation. I was thinking it was too early for her to lay, but maybe not. Hopefully, that means I'll get some nice dark eggs from my BCM ladies soon. They're the same age.

This cockerel had split wing. It might have been on the other wing though. Anyways I was planning on keeping him till I noticed that. He was gonna be butchered until @jdk77 (I think this is the right one person) came and got him. I told her husband about it and he said he didnt care so he got a nice home a flock roo.

I have to wait for Minnie or Lala to tell what it is cuz I dont quite remember exactly.
