Minnesota!

I can pm Tripell. I got the three legbar pullets from her this spring, and the rooster is the one that just went to the path lab, and the other pullet died suddenly about a month or so ago - one of the ones I now suspect mareks. I'm thinking if I found someone with turkeys, I would meet them at the end of their driveway....so I don't bring anything onto their property. I feel like a plague carrier.

oh, just to make it clear, if this is mareks, it came from the air or birds here, or feed store, etc. I am NOT saying it is from Tripell! I didn't vacinate her chicks, and I didn't vacinate the chicks from the year before, and I didn't vacinate the ones hatched out from broodies this spring..

So if any of you have unvacinated pullets or adults.....I would try the turkey litter method.

I have turkeys....

Are you looking for turkeys or Turkey poop?

Definitely turkey poop - if they have been kept separate from chickens. Really, its the litter with the feathers and poop and dander, because turkeys apparently carry a virus similar to mareks, and when you expose chickens to it , it acts like a vacination.

I was told to get the litter because it would have all three. But I would take whatever I can get! would drive on the weekend and pick up...would promise to wear clean clothes/shoes/ and go thru car wash before getting there, and would meet you at property line or at another location if you would like to be extra cautious about the possible mareks. Hoping for a feed sack full.

Let me know.....thank you!

My turkeys and chickens run together. Sorry.

I have an area outside where the turkeys roost on a dog kennel. ( no one said they were smart) that has some poop below it.

I will run out and see how much pure turkey poop I have....

Not sure if it is what you want or need.

BACK>>>

Just went out and looked, I think I have 3-4 gallons maybe even a full 6 gallon pail full of pure or nearly pure turkey poop, with some oak leaves mixed in..

yes, that would work, I think! I have the univ of mn vet at the path lab emailing me his thoughts on trying this....I know one bycer who had this work for her, and hasn't had further mareks in 9 years.

So...could I come pick up the poop ? I could be there wed about 5 or 6 or sat morning...would either of those work? thank you!

You'll probably be hearing from me whenever the time comes to start rebuilding my flock! What breeds do you have besides the Buckeyes? Do you have Australorps?
For next season I will have Buckeyes, New Hampshires, Welsummers, BBS Cochins, Easter Eggers and MAYBE Black Ameraucanas and a very few Black Orpingtons. I also have bantam Salmon Faverolles and Silkies in White and BBS (Blue/Black/Splash)

Mareks is EVERYwhere. The vaccines aren't what they are cracked up to be either. The truly effective stuff, apparently is used in the big hatcheries, but the stuff we would be as retail consumers is not the same. The best way to fight it is to cull any birds that are symptomatic and only keep strong, healthy birds. If you don't believe me, look up fowlman01, he has been at this poultry stuff for longer than I have been on the Earth and has some information he shares in regards to it. I think there are a couple of recent discussion threads about it on here too. Getting just any turkey litter is not necessarily going to be effective at inoculating unless the flock it comes from actually has the sheddings you want. It is kind of a vicious circle too, the only way to know you have it is to test, which may end in your flock being destroyed. Inoculating or vaccinating may work, but how do you know unless you test before and after inoculating?

duluth ralphie, I totally understand. I think it would be better to meet somewhere else than your place, just in case. I am halfway between pine city and hinckley near the wisc border. I also work in the twin cities during the week. Let me check some things out first though....I really appreciate your willingness to help.

I'm trying to figure out with the path lab vets about the turkey litter they are urging me not to in case the turkeys would transmit salmonella. I tell you! this is nuts. And minniechickmama makes sense about the turkey litter too. I have to do more research.

minniechickmana, yes, it is everywhere. I've been following a thread on "after mareks", building a resistent flock. So far, the ones that have been sick have died within 24 hours..
I will look for ironman.
