Minnesota!

As excited as I am about Fleet Farm, I also am very torn about it too because of what it might do to the local businesses. I get my chicken feed and supplies from Dan's Feed Bin in Superior and I will continue to do so because they are local, have great customer service, and deliver to hardware stores up the North Shore. I love L&M too, but I live up the shore so going down to L&M is just too much of an extra jaunt. Although I have made a special trip to Cloquet a time or two because the one bad thing about Dan's is that a lot of their stuff only comes in 50 pound bags. I don't need 50 pounds of oyster shell for 5 or 6 chickens!
So, I guess my plan is to continue getting what I get at Dan's and go to Fleet Farm for all of those other little things. Not only animal supplies, but they have great prices on vehicle maintenance supplies and so many other things. I think even Menards, Home Depot, and Gander Mountain might get a little nervous. It's going to be a super convenient location for me too because I go to Sam's Club every time I'm in Duluth (it's going to be right behind Sam's). It's like the farm girl's Target!

I find the feed cheaper at my local feed mill than at Fleetfarm. I actually buy a lot of my clothes at Fleetfarm, much to the chagrin of my spousal unit.... She has no sense of style!

It will be handy right behind Sam's!

OH I'm sure I'll be doing most of my clothes shopping there. Carhartt all the way baby! Although, Northwest Outlet has great Carhartt selection and prices... another local store that's just a bit out of the way

. If I actually lived in the Duluth area it wouldn't be a problem, but when I'm just down for the day I need to get as much done in as little amount of time as possible so unfortunately that sometimes means choosing the big stores over the locals.

Thanks Foxy. I was lucky to be handed two pullets this spring from the local kindergarten incubator project. So all told I'm housing 9 birds this winter. It will be more spacious in the coop than last winter and I'm good with that. I'll start working on ideas for next springs chicks. I thought maybe I wanted another NH yesterday. But maybe some marans or EE or oe would be nice for colorful egg baskets.
I used to waffle between wanting a colorful flock or a colorful egg basket, but now after these feather picking issues I've had I just want a friendly flock! I'm thinking I'll stick with the Australorps, or maybe try some of Minnie's Buckeyes.

its great to hear about new (to me) options - L&M and Dan's Feed Bin - going to check them out next time I'm headed north.

Not to be annoying but.....anyone know anyone with turkeys?? I really am desperate to get the turkey litter. Heck, I'ld pay to ship it!

Wow. I'm interested too....!

just put down my NH hen today. Abdomen full of egg yolks. She lasted all summer and kept up with the crew. But this week she just wasn't doing well. Sad to see that girl go. Minnie I'll probably be talking to you next spring about some NH eggs or chicks. I really like the breed.
Sorry to hear you lost one. I will most definitely have them next season.

Lala message @Triplell. She was thinking about turkey's this summer. I just don't know if she followed through with it. I haven't heard much from her on the thread this summer though. And I might know of somebody around here that has a pair or so of turkey's but don't know the people very well.

I can pm Tripell. I got the three legbar pullets from her this spring, and the rooster is the one that just went to the path lab, and the other pullet died suddenly about a month or so ago - one of the ones I now suspect mareks. I'm thinking if I found someone with turkeys, I would meet them at the end of their driveway....so I don't bring anything onto their property. I feel like a plague carrier.

oh, just to make it clear, if this is mareks, it came from the air or birds here, or feed store, etc. I am NOT saying it is from Tripell! I didn't vacinate her chicks, and I didn't vacinate the chicks from the year before, and I didn't vacinate the ones hatched out from broodies this spring..

So if any of you have unvacinated pullets or adults.....I would try the turkey litter method.
