Minnesota!

Ralphie,
It seems that you are a long way from Duluth. How is it that you come by that handle?

WOW, I am amazed you know where Orrock is! I though only those that live here knew of it!

I grew up on the farm I now live on, back when it really was a farm. I moved away from here at 18, moved a bit as I got established and ended up living just outside of Duluth for 30 years until I retired and moved to Florida, which was great until the first grand daughter was bor. Then my wife refused to live in Florida anymore..... Wanna buy a house on the gulf of Mexico?

Years ago I needed an email address. I was watching my favorite movie at the time. Ralphie had just shot his glasses in the "Xmas Story". SO I tried Ralphie and it was taken, added Duluth to it and it worked, I have used it ever since. Not much of a story, but that is how I took the handle Duluthralphie.......

BTW "The Xmas Story" is the greatest movie of all time!

yes, for mareks.

After 15 years of vacinated chickens, in 2013 i had chicks hatched for me which weren't vaccinated, and then this spring I had a broody hatch and bought 3 legbar chicks. so more than half my flock is not vaccinated. I took a rooster to the univ of mn path lab on thursday to be euthanized and tested, he was showing the leg paralysis - guessing mareks. His sibling died suddenly a few weeks ago, and a few weeks prior to that one of the 2013 hens died - although I think she had egg peritonitus because she leaked egg yolk and egg white when I picked her body up.

Have you ever used turkey litter for that? it is new to me and I am anxious to learn more.

Wow. I'm interested too....!

just put down my NH hen today. Abdomen full of egg yolks. She lasted all summer and kept up with the crew. But this week she just wasn't doing well. Sad to see that girl go. Minnie I'll probably be talking to you next spring about some NH eggs or chicks. I really like the breed.

Bogtown, I worded that poorly. I mean, use turkey litter to innoculate the flock against mareks. Turkeys have a virus similar to mareks and supposedly exposing chickens to it helps give them some immunity or antibodies against mareks.

I mentioned the hen with the internal laying because all this death is on my mind. I haven't heard anything about that being related to mareks.

sorry to hear about your hen, it is always hard to lose them.

Well that's interesting about the Turkey virus and mareks. In my few years on BYC I had not run into that tidbit. Wow. But then-knock on wood- I've not had to research the disease for my own reasons.

My Sunny gave us our first egg. A good sized one at that. She was so friendly with the kids and I. And she was pretty close with the rooster too. I'm not sure how he's going to react to her being missing. They would hang out quite a bit together. I'm also re homing an OE roo tomorrow. The whole flock dynamic will be messed up entirely tomorrow I'm sure. Oh well. Better than dealing with it in the middle of winter.

congrats on the first egg, no matter how llong you have been raising chickens, it is still a thrill when that first egg happens.

Yeah, flock dynamics are definitely messed up in my flock. I culled a few roosters about a month ago, and spared a rooster that was too small to be worth butchering for meat. Now he is huge, and harassing all the hens. Just started learning how to dance. Still calls them over while gobbling up the treat himself, lol. Anyway, the flock hasn't been stable for about 2 months.

I have one pullet who insists on roosting in the pines, way above my head. I don't want to clip her wings because I worry she won't be able to fly up to the roost. If I am not standing there preventing her from going into the pines, thats where she will spend the night. WIth all the owls, and the weedy trees growing in the pines starting to lose their leaves, I figure an owl will pick her off soon - she is a light colored hen to boot.

Still having trouble finding turkey litter!

Boy there are some really nice chicken set ups out there. Both homes for the Roosters I raised this summer are just gorgeous. Free range set ups and the coops spacious and well thought out. There's some talent out there in this Minnesota crew of Chicken raisers. Wow

We took our Blue to his new home tonight. He will be a totally spoiled boy. Love it.

From these sweet moments as wee ones to getting them to this:

and being able to find them their own flocks to command. I'm glad they are getting the opportunity. Special thanks to MinniechickMomma for these fine hatching eggs. These birds sold themselves...I'm sure.
