Minnesota!

Is anyone heading to Hutchinson this weekend? I will have a few birds for sale. I am going to offer a pair of Black Orpingtons. I may or may not show the cockerel, I am still debating, but either way will sell him. I will have a trio of New Hampshires also for sale that are not quite to the adult stage, no to point of lay, at least. You can look me up there if you are going and are interested!
You poultry folks should come on out to the show even if you don't want to buy, there will be some nice birds that if it is anything like last year!

minniechickiemama,
the show sounds wonderful!

I will pass just because of the mareks in the flock. I got results from the last two necropsies done at the univ of mn path lab - I brought down a sick hen 5 years old whose eyes were turning grey (a mareks symptom) and the cockeral that was tormenting the crested birds. The cockeral who was hatched by a broody this spring had absolutely no signs of mareks although the definitive pcr tests weren't done so he could have been a carrier.

Duluthralphie was kind enough to gather up turkey droppings and feathers last week, and meet me in town. I put those droppings etc in the run last week in hopes of helping with immunity for future birds, and possibly to help with the current flock.

Vet said all the chickens tested showed too much cocci, even the 5 year old hen. I was not as diligent this summer with garlic cloves in the water and ACV, and both of those would have helped deal with cocci.

I'm making apple cider vinegar with all the apple peelings and cores from baking....

I hope it gets better!

Maybe you need to get your own turkeys?

I happen to know someone with extras that would gladly move instead of being guest of honor on Nov, 27th. Even though they love cranberries.

lol, I'm going crazy now with trying to deal with all these issues with the flock. And I am just recently getting to the stage where I can eat my own chickens....might have to work up to turkeys!

Hi. We've been hanging around BYC for awhile but finally signed up a month ago. Thank you to everyone for posting pics and teaching us how to build a coop that would keep our girls safe. We live near Wyoming/Stacy and have 3 beautiful white silkies, 1 buff Orpington, 1 barred rock and 1 silkie that is likely a cross or is just not bantam. She's big and white with silkie feathers but not as fluffy and no beard. You can see her eyes :)

We just got our first eggs this week and are so proud of our girls. It's like Christmas every day!

When I can figure out how to put up pictures I will put some up of our flocks and the coop.

Welcome!!

We got our first eggs last week. It is exciting. We are only getting one or two a day, but I free range everything and I think the birds are hiding the eggs . We are working on a run to lock them up for awhile, which should help egg recovery.

My guess, Ralphie is the short days got them interrupted. I am getting about 8-12 eggs and I lost count on how many birds I have right now. It is time for them to take their rest and get ready for old man winter. Get them with some extra light and you can start seeing eggs again. I actually let my girls take their break, gives them a rest on the reproductive system so they can last a little longer for me. I turn up the lights so I can get eggs to start hatching right after the first of the year, and unless we have another winter like the last, it has worked well for me doing it that way.

Duluthralphie that's funny. Our's just started too but I'm thankful to have any this year. We got our chickens in June so I figured there was a chance we wouldn't see eggs until spring. It seems our daylight hours have shrunk fast.
