Minnesota!

I feed year round, I enjoy my morning coffee and watching wild birds.

I do not have a cat, the eagles got our last one, We do not have feral cats, I assume the eagles got them too. Eagles get everything small around here.

My regular visitors are:

Downey Woodpeckers
Hairy Woodpeckers
Red Bellied woodpeckers
Pileated woodpecker ( about twice a week)
Chickadees
blue jays
grey squirrel. ( not invited a party crasher)
White and red breasted nut hatches.

I had a half dozen gold finches around Xmas and have not seen them since.

I try to get cardinals, but they avoid me.

Oh I miss it now seeing those bird names listed out....I should go get the feeders out or buy some...

Mom and Dad usually get the Grosbeaks (gorgeous gold ones) and on a rare day the pine grosbeaks. Finches--purple and gold. nut hatches, chickadees, juncos, blue jays ( I like those guys even though they bully a bit).

I loved watching the transition of the Goldfinch from winter to summer --eating the dandelion tuft in the spring. Leaving their little purple droppings on the deck rail. Ha....

We've been having some luck with some Bluebird houses in the yards. We've had some nesters the last couple years. Those are fun.... I do love a blue bird.... Indigo Bunting and Scarlet Tanager and a cardinal pair were my best days at the bird feeders...rare days though.

I have not had a grosbeak yet this year. I live too far south for grey jays.

I also like the purple finches and the house finches, but am never sure which one I am looking at. I have not seen them this year either and I have more feed out than ever????????

Red Squirrels would receive a special greeting, I really dislike them. They destroy so much stuff. The grey squirrels are pains but they are cute.

We have most of the same birds in Florida except the gold finches. In addition we do have a lot of blue birds and cardinals and some brown thrashers and once in awhile a meadowlark, also hawks and owls. We have some snow birds right now (Robins). Cedar Waxwings are also snow birds. We only see them for a very short while usually in February. We have some Dahoon Holly trees and the Robins and the Cedar Waxwings love the red berries on the trees. They only stay for a short while they eat the berries off of the trees. We have gray squirrels (which I hate) and fox squirrels (which I like). The fox squirrels aren't destructive like the gray squirrels are

I have a home in Florida also. The grey squirrels we had down there are much like the red squirrels we have up here. Your fox squirrel is a lot like our grey squirrel only a tad more red.

I have never had a bluebird at my feeders but I have them along my fence line on the swamp. I have had indigo buntings at the feeder and I really like them, They are beautiful birds...

BTW I went out and forced some of the chickens out of the coop and gathered eggs, I am up to 8..dang weather!

Just one egg from the pullet today. I think the older SLW is on egg break again. She's dwindling on what she gives me as a rule anyways.

We just finished with 2-3 inches of snow...and now we have clear skies and a brisk-go-to-your-bones wind. brrrr....

This wind is nuts today. My path to the coop is completely drifted over! And there was no way any of the birds were going out today - they moved as far away from the chicken door as they could when I tried to open it for them, so I just shut it back up. Too windy and unfortunately for me, the people who put the chicken door in way way back when (the shed that is the coop is from the 30's) put it on the western wall so the wind gets right in. I need to wrap my run in plastic, but I waited too long and now I would have to freeze my fingers off to do it. If it gets even anything like thaw in the near future, I'm going to put dollar store clear shower curtain liners on the open fencing to block the wind. Poor birds hate being cooped up.

But I must not be the only person thinking spring - I have buyers for all of my New Years hatch chicks and some for the next round due the 19th already. And I decided to switch out roosters (literally decided last night that I wanted to swap out my 2 year old for my nearly 1 year old) and today got an email inquiring if I had any adult roos to sell of this breed as a companion to someone's lonely hen. Sounds like my 2 year old Fog is probably going to get a nice new home as a pet too - what better life could he ask for. I'm glad actually - I really like him and he is gorgeous, but I have too many roos and there won't be space for him when our new breeds arrive next month (can only keep so many roos before it becomes a total zoo). DH is happy I am willing to sell some of my birds so he can have some of the ones he wants.

How come your not down here right now? It was 29 here this morning. Got up to 50 today but the wind made it seem a lot colder. I guess Jacksonville got a dusting.

BTW Where is your place in Florida. I'm near Ocala.

My wife is not old enough to retire and my pensions insurance stopped covering her with implementation of Obamacare, so she needs to work full time for health insurance. We were both retired but to cut expense spouses were removed from my insurance unless I want to pay $900 a month for her. So we moved back to Minnesota where the grandkids are, if she had worked fulltime in Florida we would not have seen them. So here we are/

We have our home down there rented out, It is on the Cottee river in Port Richey. If you know where the gambling boats leave from, then you know where my house is.
