Gophers

Sounds like we are talking about gophers, moles and ground squirrels.
Gophers are formidable opponents, with their nasty claws and teeth. Moles and ground squirrels are harmless.

Then there are baby rabbits, which Handsome Tomy loves fo eat.
...preferably in the house,
...on the carpet.

It was graduation day yesterday here. We moved all the birds up a grade/school.

Penguin is in High School now, they just grow up so fast.

The guineas were all held back now of them have gotten beyond middle school. Middle school has a closed campus, High school allows the birds to free range part/most of the day. I do not trust the guineas to come back.

We had 3 guineas hatch out of those two dozen eggs, the rest were all clear, with only 2 starters. One of the three guineas had to be moved out of the hatcher at a day, he was chasing the other two and pecking at their toes. We moved him to preschool, and he chased all the turkeys and bit at their toes. He had one on her back and she had given up, So we moved everyone up a grade. Leaving the guinea bully alone in a barrel bottom. I have no idea what I am going to do about this guinea, if I cannot put her with other birds I may have to cull it. Unless I mail it to holm...

The poor hatch made me wonder about the eggs under the broody, So we went up to candle her eggs, Thinking if they were clear I would give her the guineas that just hatched. I gave the hen to my wife to hold while I candled. I picked up the first egg, and dropped it! it had a baby about a day from hatching in it, I felt so bad I killed one. I looked at a couple more saw they were not clears and left.

The broody went right back to her eggs, she is one determined broody.

The other broody I moved refuses to sit on the nest I gave her, but she is still "clucking" while walking around the pen, She will either sit or stop clucking one of the two,

Now it is time to liven things up, I think I will start a thread on what do I do when my chicken has an abscessed tooth.

Rhett I need to ask this, Does it bother your husband when he meets someone that thinks they know it all?

I ask because most of us that know it all are irritated by those that just think they know it all, but don't really know it all.

I cant believe Bert is gone. Awe rip sweet roo. The pictures for his memorial post were perfect Ralphie. The one of him looking at the small chicken pop door cracks me up the most.

I wish my Fern would stroll back into the yArd but I guess I lost her.

Sylvia dropped a boatload of feathers last night. She has one worming dose in her so now she'll have to wait for another worming. I can't have funky feathers on her with the winters we get. She has always molted early. But she looks beautiful in the fall when everybody else looks like heck.

Fun to hear about the little girl visiting your yard birds Ralphie.
Rhett's your new birds look beautiful.

I went to a layer feed at about 15-16 weeks old. Right as their bodies prepare for laying. I did all flock for a while as I read the extra calcium in Layer food was not good for the rooster. But then we had laying issues. Which resolved with stricter layer feed.

It's been a full week with Sadie Mae already but were getting our visits in and my kids have been great playing with her and picking up poo and pittle accidents.

Sadie doesn't like the heat either in fact she down right complains and wines about it.
She visited my computer room this morning when she got up and DH wasn't watching. She chewed cords and after an amazon replacement shopping spree to replace damaged goods we are at about $50 to start the ball rolling. Crap. I'm constantly picking up the kids' shoes because those are next if given the chance.

She is beautiful tho' and a sweetheart. There's a gentleness in there and my feeling remains she's going to be a "good one."

She's adorable! The chewing, ugh! The first dog my DH and I got together was a terror. A terror! She ruined every pair of shoes I owned except the one pair I was wearing. So beware. A chew toy or a bone is nowhere near as appealing as a shoe :)

I am not sure I agree, a wooden chair leg rung is very appealing too.. When we first got married we bought an expensive "to us" dining room set. When we got out first dog, she chewed the rungs, the dog is long gone, the chewed rungs are still with us..

As you well know, trying to have a conversation with someone who thinks they know it all can be extremely frustrating. Sometimes it can get heated. Sometimes the conversation must be put on hold for another day but those who truly know it all are persistent in their knowledge and eventually the lesser know it all will concede. How long did it take your DW to realize what a blessing it is being married to such a know it all? Or is she like me still trying to prove DH wrong?

Oh, yes. Said dog never chewed on the table legs, but the bedposts. Ruined my bed frame. And the mattress. And the books on the bookshelf.

She fights me all the time, she is a strong willed woman! She is constantly trying to catch me being wrong or making a mistake, it gets old, but I know she needs me to survive. She is so strong willed she will even resist making me a meal I have wanted, a few times.

She is constantly making errors and when I point them out, out of my concern for her well being she will continue to insist she is correct. Life would be so much better if she just learned I am always right and have never been wrong.

That's the way we like to hear about birds coming home!

Grats...Pictures?
Sorry, no pics. My camera isn't working quite right, I'll try messing with it again later.

After I had posted yesterday, I went out to pick strawberries. I have a soft sided shed by the strawberry patch were I keep my extra straw bales. While out there, I heard a chirring like a happy little chick, no loud cheeping like it was lost or anything. I went to investigate, finally having to crawl under the back wall, (which wasn't easy, I'm not as young or as skinny as I used to be). I found where she had been nesting. There were still 3 eggs in the nest. One was partially zipped and stuck, one had just pipped and the last one was a dud. I brought them in the house and set up my little Brinsea. I carefully wet the stuck one down and it hatched and is now out with mom. The last one is about halfway zipped so should also be out with mom shortly. I am so surpised that they haven't cheeped at all, just the quiet, soothing little chirring.
I'm thinking some of the other chicks must have fallen out of the nest (she had it 2 bales up) and called to mom until she got off and went with them.

That is a direct quote, something my DH would say!! LOL!!

@holm25 -Do your ducklings lay the first fall or do they go through the winter first and then start in the spring? (that is what mine did they were mid june hatchlings last spring) How early have you had ducks start laying? I was just reading that some have had Pekins start at 16 weeks. That seems ridiculous. But got me wondering if these new ducklings might lay this year. I am also having trouble getting the older ducks to behave with the younger ones. They are downright nasty. Should I just forget trying to get them to integrate and make separate areas? The ducklings are 8 or 9 weeks old but are pretty close in size to the adults.
