I know, you all think I am the smartest human to ever live, but I actually have a question about something....

My turkey hen that hatched out the chicks the other day,,,,,Is a pain in the rear. I did not put her in a femce/tractor right off the bat. She has become a recluse. She is hiding with her chicks, I have tried to give her some chick starter by dumping it right infront or near her, but instead of letting them stay and eat it she takes them further into the weeds.

Do you think I should catch and lock her and her babies up or will they get enough nourishment by free ranging? I have never allowed a hen to have babies completely free range before. Before they have stayed with the flock so I could give them at least a 15% grower. ( of course the other chickens eat it too,

I have no clue on anything birds But i would think Momma knows what she is doing,
but it you think they need more food then you do what you think you have to. You show her who the Boss is and Daddy Knows best....

I have no idea.... but I know wild turkey hens raise their chicks on their own. I am no expert tho.

I have a question too. I have a cuckoo maran that has been laying soft shell eggs. They get layer feed. Oyster shell is available 24-7. Other than force feeding some liquid calcium I do not know of any more options for calcium. I do not know for sure how long she has been laying but today's egg was softer than yesterday. It also took her an eternity to lay it and she seemed to struggle with laying it. What are my options here? What should I do or be doing different? Or is this just one of the ones that will have laying problems and is potentially a cull? This is my first soft shell chicken layer in a year of keeping chickens.

I have gotten them in the past, but they seem to be a once in a great while thing..

I do have an egg problem, I made brunch this morning and crack a half dozen eggs. The shells seem thin and fragile. I have oyster shells available all the time. Is there anything I can do to make the shells thicker?

GFTG That is where my reasoning is and knowing chickens need less protein than poults, I assume she will take care of them. ( I know they will be wild little buggars when they grow up)) I just needed reassurance. Once again, I made an error, by thinking I might be wrong. When will I learn I know it all.....

Love banjo music / bluegrass. I really like Steep Canyon Rangers. They back up Steve Martin. Had front row tickets in the orchestra pit at the State theater. But I think the Steep Canyon Rangers are almost better alone. Saw them at the Cedar Cultural Center alone. Much more intimate venue. We were able to talk with them after the show. Absolutely never disappointed.

I put oyster shells in with the food and that seemed to help. I stopped and now I still get soft / no shell eggs at times.
