Minnesota!

Well I've been super careful with it...cause you can see this deep purple runny dye--a little goes a long way. But those birds shake their head when it goes on...thus the purple freckles.

And usually I get a purple finger or two. But it works to keep the cannibalism away....for the most part.

Where do i get bluekot?

Most feed stores should carry it. I had a BO girl that was getting so picked on she didn't have many feathers. I moved her in with my RIR girls and she was blue but they didn't pick on her and her feathers grew back beautifully. She was blue for quite awhile but after she went through her next molt the blue was gone.

just be sure you don't get the other blue thing - that is what I got the first time around and when I sprayed in on a wound on a chicken, the chicken shrieked! Apparently it stung like the dickens. So the Blue Kote has a little antiseptic in it but really is used for its dye properties.

dang. 3 out of 3 eggs cracked wide open today. Hope everyone lays early tomorrow so I can grab some eggs before they freeze.

Got it, no cheap imitations.... Me being from the cheapest lineage in the state, may have time making sure I get the real one.....

I got 11 eggs today none cracked ( second day in a row for 11) but yesterday I got a very thin fragile shell... I will be glad when the cold is over and I am back at my 2 a day.

My red sex link pullets are in full lay. But my brown leghorn hens have stopped this week. I am noticing frostbite on their combs. >sigh< Treating it with Vaseline.

My coop humidity fluctuates between 55% and 65%, shouldn't this be dry enough to avoid frostbite?

My coop is very well ventilated, maybe I need to rake the bedding out again.

For sure looking into Buckeyes, Chanteclers, and rose-comb leghorns for future seasons. My Easter eggers and silkies are still looking great, though.

Anyone tried orloffs in MN?

I am down to 4 eggs today for 33 hens/pullets.

I did have a 5th egg but it was smashed and partially devoured.

Now comes the real troubling thing. I found on of the gangstra's in a nest box today. (gangstra=Guinea). I cannot prove it was eating or destroying eggs. It is the first time I have caught one in a nest box.

I readily admit I have become prejudice against guineas, but with good reason, whenever I have problems they seem to be behind it. I have informed my DW we may start eating guineas soon. They are fat becoming as disliked as geese here.

I could just lock them out of the coop and feed them to the owls, and would if I did not want the owls to think this is a good safe place to eat.

Giving the guinea the benefit of doubt, can any of you think of a reason for one to be in a nest box, head first feet on the edge butt hanging out, that is innocent?

I really like my guineas in the summer, they are fun to watch and they eat tons of bugs and are good watch dogs, but this time of year they drive me nuts. If I keep them I will need to make them their own coop and covered fence this spring.

When I mentioned eating them or feeding them to my DW she said, they really catch the bugs and travel the whole farm eating them. Then she said they are fun to watch. I guess they will be here next year.

I am doomed to a life of tribulation and strife,,,,,

I'm not sure about the Orloffs. Try treating the frostbite with Bagbalm or Corona. They stay on better than Vaseline and have healing properties. I'm treating a RIR hen for frostbite right now and I am using Corona on her frostbite.
