Minnesota!

Had to get out ol trusty the shotgun last night. The smell of skunk was so incredibly horrid inside the house it was as if the skunk had put its rear right on the window screen and let loose. I assumed the skunk was right out in the yard but I could not find it at all. None of the animals were acting as if there was a problem either. DD said it was so strong she felt it on her tongue and felt like she were going to puke. OOOEEE it was awful!!! All the animals were accounted for this morning. Not sure what to make of it.

EEEewwww. I hit a skunk with the car once OMG! It came right in the vent, got all over inside and outside the car, and me. I drove right to the gas station for a car wash, straight after hitting it. Everybody was looking at me inside and outside the gas station, I said, "yeah, that's me." I can so relate to wanting to puke. Took weeks for the smell to get out of the car.

Only had one thing smell worse. Went to a Christmas concert at the target center, when I stepped out of the car I stepped in some type of liquid that smelled of death. I told my husband, "something has died here" I could smell it through the whole concert, then the ride home. had to throw out my shoes and the floor mats from my car. I think when I sold the car 2 years later it still had a faint smell. Word to the wise, if you open the door and it smells like death? close the door and park somewhere else! I'll never go to the Target center again. In my mind, the smell and the target center are now one.

I hate you guys mentioning skunks!

I just walked into the kitchen and the w

the window is open and,,,,I smell a slight skunk smell....

I am hoping it is a mile or so down the road.

I have another broody! Friday night I during chicken TV time my Hussy was there. She was her normal self. I had to go to Duluth on Saturday (Grandpa Duties). Which means I missed chicken Tv last night.

My Mom said she went to get eggs yesterday but there was a white hen on the nest and she would not get off. I went and looked this morning and "the hussy" was sitting on the nest looking determined and giving me the snake eye only a broody hen can give.

I checked tonight again during chicken TV time and she was on the nest with the same snake eye look at me. So I guess I will have more chicks after all.

The funny thing is Friday night while I was feeding the CX chicks "the hussy' walked into the coop with me and looked at all the chicks, she stood there staring at them while I fed them. I was told by a guy on here, the sound of chicks peeping will help a hen go broody. I told "the hussy" she should get out or all this peeping will make her want to be a mommy...... I guess it did.

My Turkey hen ( the one that tried to peck me to death) is still sitting on eggs, I think she has been on the nest for 5 days without even getting off for water or food.

The other turkey hen sitting on eggs just finished a week on viable eggs. ( after about 6 weeks on rotten eggs). She never seems to get off either. She was skin and bones when we removed the rotten eggs and gave her chicken eggs, I am hoping she can survive two more weeks on the nest. There is no way she will leave the nest without babies, she is so stubborn.

PS back to "the Hussy". her and my Delaware arethe only two chickens I have seen laying eggs in that nest, (it is located in the middle of the scrap iron on the scrap iron trailer). it will be interesting to see what the chicks are and which rooster is the daddy, I assume it will be Ed, because we know how the hussy likes to use her sexuality to gain favors with the roosters and ED is top rooster right now...

He has Ernie kowtowing to him, Ray running from him and has JJ and the young tom both on the injured reserve list. The two turkey toms started it Ed just got tired of them pushing him around and let them have it with his spurs. EJB Does Ed's brother that you kept have long nasty spurs too?

After much more thinking, I have a big, beautiful Partridge Cochins who I have no hens for him to breed with. This coming year, what oddball hens I have are going into my Easter Egger pen with an Ameraucana rooster, so Blade will be in a coop with all my back up roosters. I hate to do that to him, so I am looking to re-home him. He is 4-years old, an excellent rooster and just a big gorgeous bird. So, I am willing to let him go free to a flock who could use a rooster. I hate to just post him and have someone eat him, I would rather keep him than do that and give him a couple of hens somehow, I would just rather not have to make another coop for winter just for that.
If anyone wants to come and get him, let me know and you can come for him when you get a chance or can find someone to pick him up.

His name came when he lost all the points on his comb and all that was left was the "blade" portion of it. ;)

If I do end up keeping him in the end, I may keep a Blue Cochin hen or two and make some Blue Partridge babies

Oh Man! Roger the Rooster (BC's Roo) better mind his p's & q's. I wouldn't put this guy up for meat either. he'll go Minnie and I'm sure he'll be loved....

Minnie-He is gorgeous!

Ralphie-I am unable to consummate a cow/chicken trade with you. I can barely squeak the money for one cow let alone 2. Bummer. And if your standards are like EJB's I will never find one that will suit you!! The PRESSURE!!

I have an opportunity to receive a female golden retriever dog free of charge from a family member who opted to keep the mom instead. The family member is a very honest with me so I know what I am getting. I really have never trained a dog but I can try. The family member said that they would take the dog back if we can't make it work. I said I felt 3 months would be a minimum of trying. Does that seem fair? Also, two of my in laws have siblings of this dog. So I am familiar with their behaviors. DH doesn't want to try but I would be the one training.
Rhetts: That dog breed is very easy to train. She'll require your time and consistency though. But the retrievers/labs are like putty in your hands. Very responsive. Today a 10 week old pup learned to "sit" and "stay" in our house. My goodness we are so proud of her. Get her going on the basics. Sit. Stay. Come. Down. On a leash in the yard with you until you feel she's safe and responding to commands. "Leave it." "Mine." Low and stern. If she's too focused. Licking nervously. A poke in the ribs and a tssttt! to distract. If she's still too focused on the birds or 'birdie' then remove her from the scene. Don't make it a big deal. She just doesnt get the privilege to sit with you and admire the birds calmly that particular day. She'll also need to know you are pack leader. No cuddles on the couch. She stays on the floor--lower than you physically, also translates lower in the pack order. (That's a hard one for people--including my own kids.) Putting her paw on you does not mean she wants to shake. She is trying to dominate. They're cute as pie though...these dogs. And of course there is room for loving up too. We let Jasmine go in the yard with the chickens after 3 months. My Father in law told me to let her go. Oh I was scared. But she did it.

Although buttermilk sounds good. I would put some butter in between the skin and the meat with some fresh garlic so it could baste as it cooks. Onion powder, sea salt, black pepper and just a little tiny cayenne sprinkled on the top. Then some paprika for color. When having a bird as wonderful as I think yours must be, I would take the opportunity to stuff it with a onion, sage and garlic stuffing mix. Don't like stuffing? Just stuff it with large pieces of onion and some garlic for extra flavor.

Think of the buttermilk as tenderizer. What buttermilk has is lactic acid for breaking down the toughness in meat or rigor mortis like Ralphie said. I would then, prior to cooking it definitely add your butter, garlic, thyme, S & P, onion powder, Cayene and paprika!

Had a fun working with my show cow today. I didn't know any pics were taken so I didn't look at the camera

Also got some pics of Zeus at his new home with all his ladies who aren't pictured. Look how wide he is!! I wish my CX hen would take to some of the breedings but none of the eggs have started

Holm. Nice Black Angus. Also did you get Zeus from Triplell. That's the bird my son was drooling over when we picked up the creamettes. Wow does he look pretty. Good work on the relocation.

I know it's hard to chill when adults aren't acting as they should. But you take the higher ground and of course come here to vent. We all have done our share of that on here. You're such a good sport. I can tell. mature for your age. (Well to be hanging out with us and holding your own...tells me that you are.

) I'm sure its hard to hear name calling from your own Grandpa. Hang in there bud.

And remember always take the higher road.

So for the second night in a row we have had a hen fly her coop! We have 2 coops/yards and ever since we added Big Buck to 'Coop #2' one our our leghorns from Coop #1 has been flying over her 6ft fence and we find her snooping outside the fence on coop 2. I think she is attracted to Bucks crow as we have never had a hen fly out before. She apparently has some needs fulfilled haha

I feel like i probably have 3 options:
1) Clip her wings next time she escapes
2) move her to coop #2
3) add a rooster to coop #1 (I hear @Minniechickmama might be able to help me out here :) )

What do you guys think?
You could get bird netting to put over the run, AND add a rooster!

You could have some great chicken shots. I am just finishing up on my kitchen remodel. I have been thinking some chicken art may be the answer for empty walls.

Quote: I worked in a number of restaurants like Windows on Minnesota and Nicollet Island Inn for many years when I was young. Love preparing food. Although I have never had to work with buttermilk to make anything more tender. Thanks for the heads up BC.

Buttermilk does not really make anything more tender. It helps remove the unwanted tastes and chemicals. When used on fresh meats it helps take out the chemical that causes the toughness or rigor mortis. And again I am forgetting the name of the chemical.

When I use it on fish it does not change the taste or texture, it absorbs the "off tastes" fish can have from muddy, brackish or salt water. If you have ever bitten into a cat fish with the muddy tastes you can be assured it was not soaked in milk. The only Minnesota fish I would use it on would be bullheads, catfish and summer bass to remove the mud taste.

Once you have soaked it you rinse the meat and season like you normally would.
