Minnesota!

Minnie I've thought about building an outdoor cob oven for baking super fresh pizza or bread but I'll be danged if I'll do it nekked. I'll get skeeter bit and scare off my neighbors.

Oh Ralphie I wish there was no such thing as double secret probation!!!.... It would have been so much fun.

I would never get skeeter bitten, If I was nekkid outside the skeeters would be scared off.

this wind is crazy this morning!

For some reason, one of my hens has decided she must be the rooster in the flock, and has been practicing crowing all morning. First time I heard her, I went flying out thinking another fox or something.....

Not sure which hen since she is in the deep underbrush in the run, its pretty thick in places.

egg production has been up the past few days, and here I thought I would see a decrease after the fox attack.

I have two broodies in the alternate run - Petunia, she has been been broody 3x this summer so this is the 4th time. She lays an egg daily still, and I've heard that once a broody lays an egg they are no longer broody, but that isn't so for her.

Seaquist went broody 2 days ago....flies at the run door, over and over and over. Really wants on that nest. poor baby.

batten down the hatches, everyone!

It is like Dorothy and Kansas out there. Mother Nature cleaning her house dropping down a few big dead limbs. It's always a good thing to have once in a while.

My lawn boy is in canada fishing with a friend -- so I had to jump on the mower last night. I kind of miss doing it to tell you the truth. It always looks so great after.

Sylvia's feathers are coming in nicely and the roo lost one of the big tail feathers. So it's molt season. Dixie quit being broody again but she hasn't resumed egg laying. The creamette and buckeye are acting like they want to start again so we'll see. Summer heat and molting always make this a slow time for me.

I have one of them!

I give her eggs or move her and she lays eggs. I let her out and she squats on a nest and acts broody. I have no idea what to do with her. She is on the nest again.

I counted hens in the coop last night, I only had 11 hens in it. I should have 20ish. I am thinking I might have more broodies on stolen nest than I thought I had. I figured I had one or two. I was hearing an egg song up in the woods in some thorny bushes, could be more. I have no "lost" any that I know of, no signs of any attacks.

Just the skeeters? *smirk*

No, not just the skeeters. Matter of fact, when at the cabin a daily stroll au' naturale to the out house will keep bears, tigers and lions away.

I built one out of a mini- fridge. Not at all happy with it. The temp was ok but I think the humidity air circulation were off most of the time. I am researching better temp and humidity controls for next spring. I want to build two cabinets. I need two units because i am forced to do staggered hatching, so i need a hatcher also. Huge dreams, moderate plans, little capital is not best of combinations.

What brand of incubators do you guys use? I've been looking at the little giant model with an egg turner but looking for input

I use 2 farm innovators from Fleet farm, and one little giant. I use the little giant as a hatcher, because I have very staggered hatches.

They both do the same job equally poorly. (or well).

The fleet farm ones have a hard plastic case and are more durable than the little giant, costs are the same or less at Fleet farm.

My goal is to have a cabinet incubator next year. BUT it all depends on how things go here.

I do like having an unit for a hatcher.

I have egg turners for all 3 incubators, I do not use it for the hatcher, instead I keep it on my counter and use the turner to store eggs prior to going into the incubator. That way I can get several eggs from the desired birds and not have to turn them manually. (yes, I am that lazy)
