Cluckies is right, They will not roost for a few weeks, when they first roost it will be about 4 inches up. My CX's can fly about 3 feet up now they are 5 weeks old...



They will not fly over a 5ft fence without a good reason, keep them happy they will stay inside. I have 4 ft pens that I cover for my wild birds.

When I was in the Navy we went to Ft. Lauderdale, in June. When I walked off that ship I darn near hit the floor, I had to grab the rail when my knees buckled. the air was so hot and heavy I couldn't get any air in my lungs, felt like I hit a brick wall.
We made our way to th beach. The sand was so hot you could not stand on it. we ran into the ocean to cool off, right? nope, the water was super warm, felt like I was in a boiling pot of water, got out. now I'm salty, sandy, and hot. ran to that shower to wash off, it doesn't work. I'm a piece of bacon. I was on the beach a total of 15 minutes, went to the nearest bar and sat there til it closed, then stumbled back to the ship. Never went back.

they can keep it! I figured this is what hell must be like.

Ok, I went and looked, they are only 4 weeks old, I doubt they will go on any roost, they will try and pile up in the corner on top of each other. I would just leave them on the bottom floor for now if it is safe there, they can snuggle with each other and into the hay there.


You are better (braver) than me, mine stayed inside in a box until they were about 8 weeks old...

i have 3 cats inside 1 is part MainCoon,,it is safer outside...LOl

Also, the nights can get pretty chilly, do you have some heat for them? When I first got mine I didn't have the heat on them close enough, they cheep really loud when they are cold. For my next batch if I don't have a broody, I'm going to try mama heating pad.there is a thread on it in the raising chick's forum.

Serious question -- cleaning the sand out of the 5 Amigos holding pen and noticed something moving....  well looks like some food must have gotten wet and missed getting scooped out.  Found some worms that I figured were maggots.  I've given these guys mealworms but wasn't sure about letting them have the maggots.  So I scraped all of that grahdoo out of the pen.  


Are maggots okay for them to eat?

I've heard that you should be careful if the maggots are on certain kinds on meat/flesh as they can pass salmonella or something like that

I think no more than eating the flies that hatch from the maggots. My chickens and I am sure yours too eat flies by the tons, and any other insect that happens to live in a larval stage on a piece of contaminated meat.

I found a bunch of BYC type posts when I researched this and one study done in a Vermont University. The study showed the chances were the same eating the maggots as the flies.

well the girls are all tucked in for the night. it was hard to see the coop was dark inside already, but they found a corner and are all huddled together. I closed the window right above them and closed the window on the opposite wall half way, i hope they stay warm enough... i would hate for anything to happen to them....fingers xx`ed...hope i critter proofed it enough.. think i will work on that alittle more tomorrow...
