Minnesota!

Well Here goes..

I started with 53 birds, lost 6 in the brooder. I dont have the breakdown in front of me but the total of my expenses (Food, bedding, and chicks was $274.95

$274.90 / 47 birds = $5.85 per bird

I butchered in the following groups

9 weeks - 15 CX birds @ 6 to 6.5 pounds and 1 CX bird (scissor beaked) @ 4.5 pounds
11 weeks - 11 CX birds @ 9.5 to 10.5 pounds and 1 Dixie Rainbow @ 3.5 pounds
13 weeks - 12 Dixie Rainbow birds @ 4 to 5 pounds

This leaves me with 268.5 pounds to 301.5 pounds meat. If I round down to 250 lbs and up to 300 lbs that puts me at $0.92 to $1.10 per pound.

Its a bit of fuzzy math but I would say its accurate to + or - 20%

Your weights of birds were dressed, correct?

Good job 24 posts.. in a couple hours..

The Norwegians are really a curse on the earth released by us Swedes..( well partially swedes).. My Grandpa told me this, not the scare your pants off one, the other one..

He told me Norwegians use to be really good people. Then us Swedes taught them to stand upright on two legs, and they weren't even any good for pulling a plow anymore........

I refuse to eat goulash! I was forced to eat it as a kid, that and rhubarb sauce over baking powder biscuits...BOTH are outlawed here.....

Actually I am not a macaroni guy at all... (Macaroni meaning anything like spaghetti. lasagna an whatever weird names they have for macaroni based solely on its shape....

KlopKlop that is a good price. I am thinking I will come in at just under 6 bucks a bird. Hens should go 7-10 pounds and roosters 9-13 is my guess.

I have thought about pulling the little ones out, like Minnie does, but then decided against it as I like the different size birds.. I will pick the 3 smallest hens and the 2 smallest roosters to keep, as I figure they control their food intake some...( of course it could be I will just pass on bad genes too)

Thanks Klop! I will have DH check this out!!

For those of us suffering from the lack of ovation giving I found this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/699980/announcing-the-new-byc-reputation-system-ovations
That is where i found the '10 ovation limit'... but that was how it worked in the beginning. I would suspect that has changed and may be related to how many ovations you have received yourself.

PS check that last post about the meat birds again. I made some edits and added some

For us, dinner tonight was a plate full of homegrown. Jamaican Jerk chicken (our chickens), roasted potatoes i dug tongiht, and sweet corn that was only off the stalk < 5 minutes before it was in the water to cook... mmmmmmm

I dug 1 of 4 rows of potatoes and ended up with about 35 lbs yummm. Ive got them laid out to dry in the basement but i couldnt help but steal a few for dinner.

Other monumentus news of the night....

I was working on some fencing in one of our coops and watched Big Buck uh... 'do his thing'... 5 times in about 10 minutes. Somebody get that guy an award or something... dang!

Then when i went out for lockdown i was so excited to see all 11 of my pullets on the roosts! I have been lifting them all up there for several days now trying to teach them. They have been trying to sleep in the nest boxes and it just wont do. That should make lockdown chores much quicker from now on.
Awesome. If you are trying to make me want to live in the country, it is too late. I will be growing a much larger garden next year. This year was the kitchen remodel.

Quote: Love goulosh. With a buttered piece of bread. Num!!

Yeah. I do almost all of the cooking. I really enjoy it. The DW helps with everything else. Does more of the clean up than I do. Works out really good.

Blanch Ranch. Not a huge Garrison Keiller person here either. I think because he always was a city person. Not many out-state folks listen to MPR. He did make one joke I heard though that I thought was kind of cute:
"How do you know a Norwegian likes you?" - - - - - - - -> "He looks at YOUR shoes."

There's redneck like cyrus and ralphie. There's some that are like me with stuffed critters in the house but a cleaned up yard. And there's some like this which may be leaning toward Cyrus and Ralphie again. Just sayin'.

Still don't get it. But I can tell you I don't want to meet that guy.

Never knew city people were so disliked in the country. I have many friends who live there or have lived there. Never once have I heard this. Not in any of my travels either. Love camping and riding. Never ran into it.

Who knew the ovation thing was so complex?! Just spent a good chunk of time reading that thread. Yes, there is a daily limit to ovations. And something else I learned was that the more ovations you get the more your ovations are worth. I am not sure I understand why that is. If I liked what someone wrote I give them an ovation. And I hope that I can be pleasing to others not that I need ovations, I just don't want to be that person everyone says 'oh boy Rhetts is on, time to go!'

Night all. See you tomorrow with a fresh 10 pack of ovations! :)

I don't mean any disrespect blanch ranch I think you know we like you.

I just meant more country folks are listening to country music vs. more cultured mpr stuff. Ha. My sister lives in the cities and I do like to shop there.... Sorry if that came off wrong. I count on my city friends to keep me updated with the latest styles, cuts for jeans and aioli recipes.

BYC Minnesota thread is the closest thing I have to city friends.
