I have moved some roosters ( I hope) this morning. Ed is not happy.

I have a hen that actually comes at me when I grab a rooster. The one that had the uterus problem.

I had a harder time telling roos from hens than I should have.

Here is one I was not sure of. sorry the picture is so bad.

Whats your thoughts? These are not a certain breed. these are some of Bert's babies, the barred ones. My hens combs are so red I passed that chance to sort them,

I am leaning toward a cockerel because I see that some longish feathers are curving down off the saddle in the fashion of a male. If you can grab him, look on his back to see if the long, skinny, pointy feathers are starting to come in?
What is he about 4 months or coming up on it? Those saddle feathers should just be starting if he is. The tail is what I see at that age too, just a few feathers poking straight up where they are molting to the adult feathers.

Thanks the saddle feathers was the main tell for me, but I doubted myself. Can a hen have saddle feathers? It also looks like he might have baby hackles. Yep about 4 months.

BBTW he is now moving to Guinea Gulag to be with the boys.

Luckly the rain missed us up here, allowed me to continue disking. I love fall tillage its relaxing. All I need is my harmonica, my 22-250, set of binos, and im good to go all night. Have a good day everybody!

You got one of them fancy tractors that drives itself, eh? I know what you mean though. My grandpa used to call it 'therapeutic tillage'. A good time to sit and think about things. My tilling probably lasts less time that it takes you to cross a field once and turn around though haha

No, females don't get saddle feathers. The males have pointy feathers in those areas as well, where females are rounded. Now, some breeds, the males are hen-feathered, for instance Sebrights. The males don't get the saddle and hackles on them like other breeds, so you have to look at other characteristics. Also, some breeds like Sebrights more commonly have hens that will crow too, which really screws with people living in towns where roosters aren't allowed. LOL!

@gofeedthegirls I have heard about guys around here that will bring a sack of cement and their shotgun into the combine with them. once they get going they put the cement on the seat to keep the sensor engaged, then stand out on the railing and bird hunt

I am having a heck of a time finding barley around here. I really would like to find some for mixing up grain rations... There is barley straw for sale like crazy so I assume it's grown around here but nobody selling the grain. Not even the local elevators.

It's $20 per 50lbs to get it ordered into the local feed store.

Was that place with the goats closer to Red Wing? There is a place that rents out goats to clear land; They bring as many goats as needed & fencing, you have to fence off any trees or areas you don't want damaged or cleared. Up over Diamond Bluff way they have quite a few sheep, most of those farms have Aussies from the breeder I got my 12 yo from. She always needs untrained sheep, so she keeps borrowing sheep & sends them back trained & sometime sends a dog too. I love the River Run. Used to drive the bus for the senior apartments in Red Wing during the Fall color rides & I just let them tell me where to go because they knew the best places.

oh I need to rent goats!! blackberry picking in the brush by the woods I was dismayed to find a huge poison ivy infestation. Way to much to spray, and so far that spraying hasn't really worked well for me in the areas I've been trying. But....won't coyotes eat goats?

your phone vendor should have cloud tutorials on their website - I know verizon does (ask me how I know).


and, in my book, you can be a class 1 redneck AND a treehugger! eat venison AND granola. listen to country AND MPR. I could go on, but I wont.....


and just to make this post chicken related, three days after the soap in the water, and the tumeric/garlic/wormer herbs added to the feed, I got more eggs!


Also, want to complain about EEs. They are soo docile. I had one as a chick some years back and I literally had to duct tape her back just about the tail because she was letting her flockmates eat her feathers and draw blood. Now I have one who is about 18 months old and having her first molt. Her best buddy is a buff orpington. The buff is eating the EE's little feather stubbs that are coming in. She just walks over and starts grazing on the EE. Worse yet, the EE goes over and sidles up to her so the BO can eat more! I tried some old booster rooster pick me no more which has a horrible perfume and is basically blue kote in a lotion (works great when the area you want to cover is near the eyes). I don't know if it will work or not, if not, she is going to have duct tape muffs.

He says 10 cents from market price, I have checked not what that is. The test weight is light, but not enough to worry about it. It could be combination of many things. Really dry, ( which is good) or more than likely lots of chaff, weeds or small under sized kernels. I would not worry too much about the weight if not for the fact he is selling it under market prices. Makes me wonder if it was rejected at the mill.

But I always look for the bad.. Could be he cannot haul it for a dime a bushel.
