Minnesota!

I don't know Ralphie, the world never sees the way I do. I've been voting since the 70's and only one voted in a president. So I've learned I just don't think the way anyone else does. ANd of course, I am right,.....everyone else,......well the less said the better.

Popple Popple Popple. Ooooo that's a lot of red for the ole' spell check.

Ralphie you sounded like your Creamed Legbar Lady on the Turkey thread the other day...just for a bit. LOL...Have a drink will you?!

I've heard Popple ever since I saw dad chopping wood for the fireplaces. "Boy that Popple burns nice. Too bad it doesn't burn longer." "Did you see that big branch come off that Popple?"
So on and so forth. Poplar his just to hard to say. and not as much fun. IMHO.

ok, I'm gonna bore you all with the quails again.

First off, I think I have 3 males and 5 females. They should start laying in the spring.

Reading on byc about them is a challenge. Just like chickens, there are people who will tell you they will die if you do this or don't do that....I remember reading here on byc that you couldn't feed chickens tomatoes. or potatoes. or beans. or....so I know to not necessarily believe what I am reading.

I read that you can't keep them anywhere near chickens because the quail will get sick and die. (?) when someone asked why they were smacked down with a kind of nasty toned thing about fine don't believe me just watch your birds die response.

I've looked at a zillion pics of what look like indoor avaries for parrots, and rabbit hutch type cages, two quail to a cage.

I just don't think that is a life for a bird.

After work, I watched them, and got to hear the little males try to whistle the girls into the coop. Some of the hens would go in, others would come out, and pretty soon the males would give up and come out again, only to repeat it all over again. I finally crawled in the pen again but this time was easier, they more or less went in on their own with a little encouragement.

I found some 28% grower for gamebirds. They went bonkers over it.

They walk on their tippy toes! kind of penguin posture.

I think you all should get quail. Repopulate minnesota with them.

Photos...?

Or are they in rough shape LaLa? It almost sounds like they have found a better place here with you though. Glad you have them.

they aren't in bad shape. I think they were fed some bird seed and that usually is pretty low in protein, and supposedly they need 38-30% protein. but they look ok to me....they really love the big pen.

pics coming. I just haven't had a chance and forgot to take my phone out with me tonight.

wait to you see the way they line up when sleeping!

and bogtown I know that feeling of laying on the ground cussing and then laughing at yourself...

BC.. My post was entirely tongue in cheek though, that guy/gal was serious. My calling them creamettes will ruin the entire breed!

Lala what do they get? Is it like blackhead?

BTW I cannot repopulate Bob Whites. I went to the bob white site and read an article saying Bob Whites have as much value as chickadees. That ruined it for me, I am scared stiff of chickadees!

I've either got a clumsy chicken or an egg eater. Two days in a row with a broken egg in a nest. I am leaning towards a combo of clumsy and softish eggs luckily. DW was trying to wash the yolk off another white egg from that nest and crushed the egg in her hand. I refilled their feeder tonight and mixed in a few handfuls of calcium supplement. They have it free choice but they don't ever touch it.

that is my understanding from my own reading. either blackhead or some similar bug. The same people that get all uppity telling you how cruel you would be to risk their death would curse you up and down for letting your chickens and turkeys mingle though. The book says you shouldnt so you cant ever, ever, ever, at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ralphie:

I totally get that you were joking. I wish you could see my face of sarcasm as I typed the respnse post. sometimes my humor is dry sarcasm.
Hard to translate on BYC most of the time.

Well I'm excited to see the pics LaLa...when you get a chance. Especially them all lined up bit. Do they have the cute little antennae feather on them?

There is some truth to chickens/turkey thing. For me I know that I cannot have Turkeys with the chickens where I live due to my low swampy conditions and earthworms being a foodsource in the spring. I've watched them peel through the shore of a pot hole in search of worms and that is it. I hate it when they do that. Because it's too much on the worms. But Ralphie's high sandy ground proves that the chicken turkey blend can and does happen happily.

It will be interesting to follow LaLa's experience with the quail. Excited to watch and learn.

lol, I have no idea what disease they get from chickens, and I sure wasn't going to ask on that thread!

and tonight I've been reading various university and dnr sites about bobwhites, and now I think the protein level for their age should be closer to 20%. geesh. I have 50 pounds of 28% gamebird grower/starter in crumbles. Well, I figure I can maybe throw a little in with the chickens, they could use a protein boost...and if I keep it to a tiny part of their feed it shouldn't influence it too much. And I can dilute the bobwhite feed with some chicken feed to reduce their protein level. dang!

I guess the famous bobwhite call (i sure never heard it before) is a breeding call and won't happen til spring.

in the fall, they naturally form coveys and in the spring separate out into breeding pairs. So maybe come spring I'll have to separate them out.....how I don't know.

BC, I worry about it all the time, I see imaginary blackheads when I look at them. BUT I know they can co-exist on this sand. I bet no one could find a night crawler or worm anywhere around here.

"Sarcasm is the lowest form of WIT", That was said by some famous non-funny guy that never quite got "it".
