If they are going to the freezer I will eat them, they are so small and hardly worth the effort to butcher. Plus it is a shame to kill such good looking breeders.

Ralphie, if you need a home for them I could take one - I'm roosterless now so one would be ok. This would be a more or less save them from being eaten because I agree with you, it would be a waste to butcher them.

I still miss the little creamette rooster I lost last fall.

In case you are wondering about the mareks, apparently I have a mild variety and chickens 3 months and older are probably good to go, plus yours have the advantage of being raised in proximity with turkeys.

Little Seaquist is in the middle of molt and still laying. Never had a bird do that before...this is a pic I've posted before of her, before molt!

I added 5 more to my flock yesterday. Dark and white laced red Cornish from MCM. They will join my planned breeding project for the spring. The are surely dense little birds that will make some meat with Conrad and/or buck

I know what you mean, Ralphie, but sometimes even some of the best looking ones just need to go to freezer camp.

I had about a dozen Buckeyes early this year I got rid of because I kept finding just one thing here or there that DQd them from my breeding program. Overall, they were beautiful birds, but I can't keep a bunch just cuz they are pretty. Unless you have an endless money supply, you and I both know, you can't keep every pretty boy we hatch.

It kind of depends on your perspective...
Is a rooster that is put to use to provide food for someone a real waste? Or is it a waste to continue housing and feeding a rooster who is not going to give you anything in return but eye candy? Just a thought.

You know Mareks exists all over? If you had a really bad strain that just killed everything, I would be concerned, but what I have been told by many older/more experienced breeders than myself, is that you need to recognize the early symptoms and cull weak birds that will just share it. Also, just a thought.

I had a Silkie on year who molted late, and went broody in the corner of the pen and continued laying through most of her molt too. Who ever said that those are wussy birds?

Well turns out the chickens aren't gun shy. Felt like firing a few rounds into the makeshift range I've got back here. As I was firing they were still 50 yards off eating bugs and hoping around. Ha I figured they would have freaked!
