Minnesota!

Tragic news.... Mama cat was hit by a car today. It just doesn't want to be a decent day for me!. Now I haven't a choice about handling the kittens. Off to town to find kitten milk replacer because I'm a big softie
That's too bad about mama cat. But it takes a descent human being to take on the little ones.

I should be painting the new shed/coop this weekend, but instead I'm heading to Ren Fest. This is the last hurrah for quite a while. It will get done in time.

Sorry about the cat KlopKlop, that's terrible. I hope you can take care of the kittens, or find someone who can help. Is there a local animal shelter that could help? I know the shelter in Duluth has fosters who are prepared to take in orphans.

Speaking of chicken genders... I forgot to tell you guys about this!
About a month or so ago, while I was still waiting for my one EE to let me know if it was a rooster or not, I heard a sickly crowing noise coming from the chicken yard so I ran over there expecting to see the little one attempting his first crow. Turns out it was my my 2 1/2 year old RSL hen!! She would puff up, flap her wings and let out a crow! I've heard of that happening before, but it still took me by surprise. Especially when I was really expecting the little one to crow any day.

Bottle feeding underway! this little guy wanted a little break to say hello!

Hopefully i didnt give you guys the wrong idea. I fully intend to give these kitties the best care I can. DW and I are discussing scheduling of how we can keep them fed. they are doing so-so on learning the bottles, but they are eating some. Hopefully they get better with practice! We werent planning on having cats in the house, but things dont always go to plan now do they :) the dogs will have some adjusting to do

I have made them a nice home in a box with a towel den and a heating pad.

Coffee....where are you? Are your girls liking the new run?
aww hello...they love the new run,,,all the girls are starting to get along great now, im super happy i got 2 more girls i think 8 is the perfect number for my coop and run and backyard.. Didnt think i would love spending so much time with chickens. They follow me everywhere when im outside. i pulled up some old pavers and they were right there to gobble up the bugs, I moved my compost bins and again they had the best time, ive been dreading cleaning under the deck BUT now i dont have to it looks so nice and clean looks like i laid fresh dirt down,,,they are doing such a good job helping me... and my new Black EE has becomes friends with my lil 3 legged dog wherever my ButterFluffin goes the little hen goes funny how they are bonding...last night and tonight they are starting to get themselves up on the roost I only have to get a few up there.. I wish they would stay awake longer but they are wanting to go in the coop earlier and earlier.. I hope all is going well for you and your flock....

Sorry to hear about mama cat...i agree its going to be allot of work. might be easier to bring them in the house to keep them feed and warm otherwise you will have to make lots of trips to where they are bedded down. and i guess at this point they will for sure get use to your handling them..funny how things turn out you were destined to care for them... I wish you the best hope someone else can also help you care for them...keep us posted...

Hey @Minniechickmama , I heard you can sex eggs! Amazing! Kidding :) I was reading a forum a few days back on how some folks think incubator temperatures/humidity can determine the sex of the chicks. I guess I don't have an opinion on it. Nothing surprises me nowadays.
That is not a new argument.
After some of my hatches this year though, I think there might be a little truth to it. It isn't that one temp or the other makes more of one sex or the other. Keep it one degree high and it kills more of one sex, keep it one degree too low and it kills the other sex THEORETICALLY. If it were true, it would allow anyone to adjust the incubators to produce only one sex or the other. If it were true, all those big hatcheries would be setting them to hatch nearly all pullets.
