Minnesota!

Bedding question - I'm going clean out the coop soon and get fresh bedding in there for the winter. I just have hay down now, but I'm thinking of using a few inches of pine shavings and then a few inches of hay. Does anyone use DE in their coop? I'm thinking of sprinkling some on the floor, then again on top of the pine shavings before I put the hay down.

I don't use de or pdz, just hay. I like hay better than straw, straw is slippery for me and some say the hollow stems harbor mites. I start with hay, and toss either more hay or bagged leaves on the bedding as needed - usually pick up the big frozen globs of poop first, then cover with clean hay or leaves.

I started using bagged leaves a few years ago, the hens seem to enjoy scratching through them, and they are free!

Bogtown and Minniechickmama, thanks for the encouragement about that polish silkie bantam. Glad to know she can survive without extra heat! and hopefully will not be picked on...

Well we butchered 10 birds today 8 roos and 2 drakes. Had to shoot one roo in the head with an air gun because we couldnt catch him. It was a chicken safari for me.

I bought a couple of bags of PDZ today to try out.
We use a mix of straw and shavings, poop board project is next.
